Pre-configured Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with full GNOME desktop and RDP — connect from any RDP client.
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS GNOME Desktop is a fully configured Linux desktop environment for Azure, designed for users who want a familiar graphical workstation in the cloud without spending hours on setup.
This image is built from Canonical's official Ubuntu 24.04 LTS server base and adds the complete GNOME desktop environment plus the xrdp remote desktop server, pre-configured to work together. After deployment, simply connect with any standard RDP client — no extra configuration, no proprietary clients, no licensing surprises.
What's included
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) — supported by Canonical until April 2029
- Full GNOME 46 desktop environment (the standard Ubuntu desktop experience)
- xrdp remote desktop server, pre-configured for GNOME under Xorg
- Standard Ubuntu application set: Files, Terminal, Text Editor, Settings
- System fully patched at image build time
Who this is for
- Developers who need a Linux GUI workstation accessible from anywhere
- Data scientists and researchers running graphical tools (Jupyter, RStudio, MATLAB, scientific visualization)
- DevOps and SRE teams needing a jump host with a desktop for tools that don't run well over SSH alone
- Educators and trainers provisioning consistent Linux desktops for students or workshops
How to connect
After deployment, open port 3389 in your network security group (if not already open), then connect using:
- Windows: Built-in Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc.exe)
- macOS: Microsoft Remote Desktop from the App Store
- Linux: Remmina, FreeRDP, or any RDP client
- iOS / Android: Microsoft Remote Desktop mobile app
- Browser: Any HTML5 RDP gateway
Use the admin username and password you set during VM deployment.
Recommended VM sizes
For a smooth desktop experience we recommend at minimum Standard_D2s_v5 (2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM). For graphics-heavy workloads, consider Standard_D4s_v5 or N-series VMs with GPU.
Security
The image ships with no pre-set users — Azure creates the admin account you specify at deployment. SSH and RDP are the only enabled remote access services. We strongly recommend restricting RDP (port 3389) in your Network Security Group to known IP ranges, or fronting it with Azure Bastion.
Support
For technical support, see the support links on this page. For Ubuntu OS support, Canonical's standard LTS support applies for 5 years from the 24.04 release date.
