Databasus is an open source, self hosted backup tool for PostgreSQL. It takes scheduled physical and logical backups, streams write ahead log data continuously so a database can be recovered to a chosen moment rather than to last night, applies retention by time, count or grandfather father son, and encrypts what it stores with AES-256. Backups go to local disk, S3, Cloudflare R2, Azure Blob Storage, Google Drive, Dropbox, SFTP, a NAS or anything rclone can reach. It also backs up MySQL, MariaDB and MongoDB.

What separates it from a dump script is that it proves its own work. Restore verification performs a real restore of a backup into a temporary database, counts the rows in every table and reports the result, so a backup is known to be restorable rather than assumed to be. A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a backup.

Everything runs on your own VM. No third party sees your data, and there is no cloud service in the middle.

Secure by default, because the default is not safe

A stock Databasus install is not safe to expose. It creates an administrator account with no password, and the endpoint that sets that password requires no authentication and stays open until somebody uses it, so on a public address the first person to reach the VM becomes the administrator. It also permits open self registration by default, so any stranger could create a working account on your backup server.

cloudimg never ships it that way. On the first boot of every instance, over the loopback interface and before the port accepts a single request from the network, this image generates a unique administrator password, claims the administrator account, proves the endpoint is now closed, and turns self registration off. A unique demo database password is generated at the same time. Both are written to a file only the root user can read.

Nothing is baked in. The data volume is destroyed before the image is captured, so every instance starts with an empty database, a fresh AES-256 encryption key of its own, and no credential that any other instance shares. The container images are baked in, so the first boot needs no registry access.

Sizing

Standard_B2s (2 vCPU, 4 GiB) is the recommended size and is comfortable for the appliance itself and the bundled demo database. Databases with large physical backups, or many protected databases on aggressive schedules, warrant Standard_B2ms or larger, and backup storage that lives off this VM.

Licensing

Databasus is free and open source software under the Apache License 2.0. There is no licence fee and no key to enter. The cloudimg charge covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 support.
