Pre-hardened Ubuntu Server 25.04

av Derek Coleman & Associates Corporation

Pre-hardened Ubuntu 25.04 VM for cloud development, DevOps, and early adoption on Azure.

Get the newest Ubuntu kernel and toolchains on Azure without building and securing the image yourself. Pre-hardened Ubuntu Server 25.04 (Plucky Puffin) gives you a ready-to-use development and DevOps environment in under 5 minutes — Docker pre-installed, hardened defaults applied, no manual setup.

In plain terms: this is a virtual machine image of Ubuntu's interim release — the version where new features land first — already configured and security-tightened, so you can evaluate tomorrow's Ubuntu today.

How this differs from a standard Ubuntu image

  • Hardened before first boot — SSH hardening and restrictive defaults are applied at build time, not left for you to script
  • Docker ready — the container runtime and build tools are pre-installed; pull and run containers immediately
  • Toolchain friendly — Python, Node.js, Go, and Rust toolchains are available out of the box for polyglot development
  • Azure native — Generation 2 image with Trusted Launch support, cloud-init provisioning, and the Azure Linux Agent pre-installed

Who uses it

  • Development teams validating applications against the newest kernel, glibc, and compiler versions before the next LTS adopts them
  • DevOps engineers running CI/CD pipelines (continuous integration/continuous delivery) on current tooling
  • Platform teams evaluating new Ubuntu features ahead of LTS (Long Term Support) adoption

Azure integration

Deploy from the Azure portal, CLI, ARM/Bicep templates, or Terraform. Enable Secure Boot and vTPM (Trusted Launch) at deploy time for firmware-level protection. cloud-init executes your first-boot configuration, and Azure Monitor, Defender for Cloud, and Update Manager extensions install cleanly alongside the baked-in stack.

Lifecycle: know before you deploy

Ubuntu interim releases like 25.04 carry a 9-month upstream support window — ideal for development and evaluation rather than long-term production. When the window closes, upgrade in place with do-release-upgrade or redeploy on the next release. For production workloads that need years of stability, choose our Pre-hardened Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS offer instead.

Technical specifications

  • Base OS: Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin), x64 Generation 2
  • Security: Trusted Launch supported (Secure Boot + vTPM optional at deploy)
  • System requirements: Standard_D2as_v5 (2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM) and up recommended for container workloads
  • Provisioning: cloud-init enabled; SSH key authentication by default

Pricing

Transparent usage-based pricing at $0.09 per vCPU per hour for the image, plus standard Azure infrastructure costs. No upfront commitment.
