VIVO Research Profiles

VIVO: Connect, Discover, Share — open source research profiling on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, ready on Azure.
Deploy VIVO Research Profiles in minutes, not weeks. A single guided Azure Marketplace wizard is all it takes — no Java, Solr, RDF triplestore, or Nginx expertise required. Your institution's research profiling platform arrives fully configured, security-hardened, and ready for data ingestion from the first login.
Built around Connect, Discover, and Share, VIVO Research Profiles is open source software adopted by 150+ universities and research institutions in 25+ countries worldwide. VIVO creates an actionable, connected map of your organization's scholarly work — enabling research discovery, expert finding, network analysis, and research impact assessment.
The complete stack is pre-installed and integrated on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS: VIVO 1.16.0 on Apache Tomcat, Apache Solr for full-text search, Jena TDB1 RDF triplestore for semantic data storage, Nginx with TLS 1.2+, and built-in internationalization (i18n) for multilingual deployments (English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese). Admin credentials, RDF namespace, and interface language are configured at deployment time via ARM template parameters — no hardcoded credentials, no post-install configuration.
Why Choose VIVO on Azure
- Zero-to-production in minutes — no Java, Solr, RDF triplestore, or Nginx expertise needed; the full stack arrives pre-integrated, security-hardened, so your team focuses on research data, not DevOps
- Boost worldwide visibility of your institution's research expertise among media, funding agencies, government bodies, and international partners — opening doors to grants and strategic collaborations
- Uncover collaboration opportunities — identify experts, collaborators, and mentors through visual network analysis of co-authorship relationships
- Make data-informed decisions with publication timelines, research topic word clouds, and geographic collaboration maps
- Connect to external data sources — automatically link institutional profiles with ORCID, funding agencies, and publication aggregators into a single connected knowledge graph
- Participate in the open science ecosystem — retain full data ownership, avoid vendor lock-in (BSD license, LYRASIS community governance), and leverage global semantic web standards
- Low total cost of ownership — no dedicated DevOps or Java stack specialist required after deployment; routine operations (backups, TLS renewal, scaling) follow standard Azure practices, keeping ongoing administration costs predictable and accessible to any IT team
AI-Ready, FAIR by Design, and Digitally Sovereign
- FAIR research data — VIVO natively supports the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable): structured RDF profiles with persistent identifiers (ORCID, DOI), a live SPARQL endpoint, standard ontologies (VIVO-ISF, OWL), and open linked data exports
- Foundation for AI and RAG pipelines — VIVO's semantic knowledge graph can feed retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflows, contextual expert search, and LLM-powered research assistants, using structured institutional data as a trusted, curated source
- Digital sovereignty — all data, models, and configurations remain exclusively within your Azure tenant; no external SaaS dependency, no data leaves your jurisdiction, giving institutions full control over their research information assets
Who Benefits
- Researchers and faculty — build individual visibility, link grants and publications, find collaborators and funding opportunities
- Research administrators and VPs — data-informed visibility into institutional research strengths, collaboration networks, and impact
- Library and research IT teams — guided Marketplace wizard, full documentation, and a pre-hardened stack cut time-to-value from weeks to minutes; ongoing maintenance reduced to routine Azure operations
- Students and trainees — find mentors, research groups, seminars, and opportunities across your institution
