Qdrant Vector Database on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

par Derek Coleman & Associates Corporation

Qdrant vector database for RAG and semantic search on hardened Ubuntu 24.04 — queries in minutes.

Qdrant on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

A production-ready Qdrant 1.18 vector database on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, hardened for Azure. Qdrant powers semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): store embeddings, filter on payloads, and query by similarity at millisecond latency. Standing it up by hand means binary staging, storage layout, and API-key management - manual, time-consuming steps between you and your first query. With this image your vector search endpoint is answering within minutes of deployment.

Who this is for: AI engineers and data teams building RAG pipelines, semantic search, or recommendation systems who want their vectors - often derived from sensitive data - inside their own Azure subscription.

What's pre-configured in this image:

  • Qdrant 1.18.2 from the official upstream release, SHA-256 verified at build time
  • systemd service enabled, serving the REST API on port 6333 and gRPC on port 6334
  • Dedicated storage directory owned by an unprivileged service user
  • Payload filtering, quantization, and snapshot support available out of the box

What happens at first boot (once, on your VM):

  • Generates a per-VM API key - never baked into the image - enables it in the config, and stores it root-only
  • Starts the Qdrant service and health-checks the API before marking first boot complete

Use cases:

  • Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) - ground LLM answers in your own documents via similarity search
  • Semantic search - query by meaning across product catalogs, tickets, or knowledge bases
  • Recommendations - nearest-neighbor lookups over user and item embeddings
  • Duplicate and anomaly detection - find near-identical vectors at scale
  • Multimodal search - image, audio, and text embeddings in one engine

Azure integration: Ships as a Generation 2 Azure virtual machine image with Trusted Launch support (Secure Boot and virtual Trusted Platform Module) so you deploy on a verified chain of trust. Azure Monitor Agent, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, and Azure Update Manager install cleanly on first boot, and the Azure Linux Agent plus cloud-init are pre-validated, so your existing Azure automation - Custom Script Extension, Run Command, VM Applications - works without modification. Keep traffic private with Azure Private Link or a network security group scoped to your own virtual network.

Security posture: The image is built from a fully patched Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base at build time, and the application is installed from its official upstream release channel with cryptographic verification during the build. No default or shared credentials are ever baked into the image: anything secret is generated per-VM on first boot and stored root-only on your VM, so no two deployments share a secret and there is no claimable open instance waiting on the network.

System requirements: Minimum Standard_B2s (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM) for development and small collections. Recommended: Standard_D4as_v5 (4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM) or memory-optimized Standard_E4as_v5 for millions of vectors - RAM scales with vector count and dimensionality. Attach a Premium SSD data disk for collection storage and snapshots.
