Server 2022 DataCenter VM

par Derek Coleman & Associates Corporation

Optimized Server 2022 DataCenter VM virtual machines for enterprise Azure workloads.

Windows Server 2022 Datacenter on Azure

A production-ready Windows Server 2022 Datacenter image, built and hardened for the Azure Marketplace. WS2022 is the current Long-Term Servicing Channel server release and is secured-core capable — the right default for general-purpose server workloads that need a supported, modern Windows base with a long support runway. This image gives you that base, sysprep-generalized, pre-integrated with Azure, and certified to Microsoft Marketplace standards.

Who this is for: Platform engineers, IT admins, and ISVs standing up domain controllers, file and print services, and application hosts on a current LTSC server, and teams standardizing a fleet on one supported Windows Server baseline.

Target industries & use cases: Financial services, healthcare, government, retail, and ISVs — Active Directory domain controllers, file/print servers, application and middleware hosting, RDS session hosts, and general server roles that benefit from secured-core hardware-root-of-trust security.

Value proposition: Standing up a secure WS2022 host on Azure means generalizing the image, configuring the Azure VM Agent, applying the current cumulative update, and validating against Microsoft Marketplace certification. This image does all of that for you:

  • Monthly patch cadence — each version is rebuilt from the latest Windows cumulative and security updates within days of Patch Tuesday
  • 33 documented hardening traps applied — every published version is gated through an automated trap-audit covering Trusted Launch, sysprep race conditions, Defender pre-installation, hardening-script residue, and 29 more
  • Trusted Launch + Secure Boot enabled by default — Gen2 image with vTPM and signed-boot configured per Microsoft’s OEM requirements, secured-core capable
  • Azure VM Agent pre-installed — Custom Script Extension and Run Command work on first boot; WinRM, RDP, and Windows Admin Center ready for management
  • Audit trail per release — build provenance and certification evidence retained for every published version

How this differs from rolling your own: The base WS2022 platform image boots, but it is not generalized to your standard, not hardened for production exposure, and not on a managed patch cadence. This image is sysprep-generalized cleanly, Azure-hardened (RDP NLA enforced, legacy protocols disabled, Defender pre-staged), and rebuilt monthly — aligned with our WS2019 and WS2025 images for one operational playbook across the fleet.

Recommended deployment: Standard_D2s_v5 or larger for general server roles; Standard_D4s_v5 or larger for domain controllers and busy application hosts; Standard_E-series for memory-heavy workloads. Premium SSD or Premium SSD v2 for OS and data disks. Restrict RDP to a bastion or just-in-time access, and front public workloads with Azure Application Gateway with TLS termination.

Azure integration: Azure VM Agent, Trusted Launch + Secure Boot, Azure Monitor Agent, Azure Backup, Azure Disk Encryption, Microsoft Defender for Servers, Azure Update Manager, Azure Automanage, and Azure VM Run Command all attach via standard extensions with no compatibility shims.
