GitLab Runner CI/CD on hardened Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for Azure

GitLab Runner on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

A ready-to-register GitLab Runner on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, built and hardened for the Azure Marketplace. GitLab Runner is installed from the official GitLab repository and enabled as a systemd service; the VM only needs your GitLab instance URL and registration token to start executing CI/CD jobs.

Who this is for: DevOps teams running GitLab CI/CD (gitlab.com or self-managed) who need dedicated Linux runners on their own Azure network.

Target industries: ISVs, regulated industries with private-network build requirements, and any team running GitLab pipelines.

Value proposition: Operating GitLab CI/CD runners means provisioning a host, installing the runner, and hardening it. This image does that for you:

  • Pre-installed GitLab Runner — installed from the official GitLab repository and running as a managed systemd service; register to your instance with a URL and token
  • Monthly patched & hardened — rebuilt each month from the upstream base with the latest OS security updates; hardened to Microsoft's Azure Marketplace certification standards before any version is published
  • Ready to run — the service is installed, enabled, and configured to start on boot, so the VM is productive minutes after deployment instead of after a manual install
  • Audit trail per release — build and certification evidence retained for every published image version, available for compliance audits and change-management documentation

Plans available:

  • GitLab Runner on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS — Gen2 — Trusted Launch-capable Gen2 VM image; free image (standard Azure compute and storage rates apply). GitLab is sold separately.

Supported software and integrations: GitLab.com and self-managed GitLab, GitLab CI/CD, Docker, Azure Container Registry, Azure Monitor, Azure Virtual Network.

Recommended deployment: Standard_D2ads_v6 or larger; size to your build concurrency. Deploy into a private VNet and scale out by registering multiple runners to the same GitLab instance.
