XFCE Desktop on Ubuntu 26.04
Launch a lightweight Ubuntu 26.04 virtual machine preconfigured with the XFCE desktop environment and xRDP for fast, secure remote desktop access over RDP. Ideal for cloud administration, GUI tooling, dev/test, and remote productivity.XFCE Ubuntu Desktop Features:
- Ubuntu 26.04 LTS with long-term security updates
- XFCE 4.20 desktop environment (lightweight, responsive, low memory) with Thunar file manager and Mousepad text editor
- xRDP + xorgxrdp preinstalled with TLS encryption and NLA support for native RDP client compatibility
- XFCE utilities: panels, window manager, sessions, terminal
- dbus-x11 for desktop apps that require DBus in RDP sessions
- Default session set to startxfce4 (X11) for consistent RDP logins — Wayland sessions available but RDP uses X11
- PipeWire audio stack (replaces PulseAudio) for broad app and Bluetooth compatibility
- HiDPI-aware display scaling for high-resolution monitors
- Works with Azure NSGs, Azure Monitor, and Azure Backup
- Clean baseline: no GNOME packages, no unnecessary services
Benefits of Running XFCE on Azure
- Fast & efficient: lower CPU/RAM usage versus heavier desktops
- Simple access: connect with standard RDP clients (Windows, macOS, Linux) or via Azure Bastion
- Secure by design: leverage Azure NSGs, JIT access, and private networking
- Cost-optimized: run smoothly on smaller VM sizes (e.g., B2s) and scale up as needed
- DevOps-friendly: easy to script/provision with Azure CLI, Bicep, Terraform
- Global availability: deploy near your teams to reduce latency
Ubuntu Desktop Use Cases
- Cloud admin desktop: GUI tools, file management, remote troubleshooting
- Developer workstation: editors/IDEs (VS Code, JetBrains), SDKs, and build tools in a managed VM
- GUI application hosting: browsers, database clients (DBeaver), graphical utilities
- Training & labs: provide students/teams a ready-to-use Linux desktop
- Jump host / bastion desktop: RDP or Azure Bastion into a controlled environment to reach internal systems
