Pre-hardened Ubuntu 22.04 high-performance VM for demanding Azure workloads.
Pre-hardened Ubuntu Server 22.04 High-Performance on Azure
A compute-tuned Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS (“Jammy Jellyfish”) image, built and hardened for the Azure Marketplace and tuned for compute-intensive workloads. This is not the stock cloud image: the kernel boot parameters, scheduler, and sysctl network and memory knobs are pre-set for sustained CPU and throughput-bound jobs — transparent hugepages, raised file-descriptor and connection limits, tuned dirty-page writeback, and a low-latency scheduler profile — so the host runs hot out of the box instead of after a day of manual tuning. Certified to Microsoft Marketplace standards.
Who this is for: Platform engineers, HPC-adjacent teams, and ISVs running batch compute, encoding, simulation, or high-throughput services who want a 22.04 base already tuned for the workload rather than a general-purpose default they have to re-tune.
Target industries & use cases: Financial services (risk and pricing batch runs), media and entertainment (transcoding and rendering), engineering and scientific simulation, ad-tech and real-time bidding, and any latency- or throughput-sensitive backend where per-core efficiency directly affects the compute bill.
Value proposition: Standing up a fast, secure 22.04 compute host normally means installing the Azure Linux Agent, configuring Trusted Launch, applying kernel CVEs, hand-tuning sysctl, and validating against Microsoft certification. This image does all of that for you:
- Compute-tuned kernel and sysctl profile — hugepages, scheduler, network buffers, and file-descriptor limits pre-set for CPU- and throughput-bound jobs, validated per release
- Monthly patch cadence — each version is rebuilt from upstream Ubuntu security updates within days of release
- 33 documented hardening traps applied — every published version is gated through an automated trap-audit covering Trusted Launch, sysprep race conditions, Defender pre-installation, hardening-script residue, and 29 more
- Trusted Launch + Secure Boot enabled by default — Gen2 image with vTPM and signed-boot configured per Microsoft’s OEM requirements
- Azure Linux Agent pre-installed and pre-configured —
walinuxagent.serviceis running; custom-script and run-command work on first boot
How this differs from rolling your own: The stock Ubuntu 22.04 cloud image ships a conservative general-purpose profile and none of the Azure-specific hardening (serial console locked down, root SSH disabled, audit logging configured). Self-tuning a host for compute is a day of trial and error nobody documents the same way twice. This image bakes that tuning in and re-validates it monthly — the compute-tuned sibling of our general-purpose 22.04 LTS, one fleet playbook.
Recommended deployment: Standard_F8s_v2 or larger (compute-optimized) for CPU-bound batch; Standard_D8as_v5 for balanced throughput. Premium SSD v2 for data disks. Pin to a single proximity placement group for latency-sensitive fan-out. SSH key authentication required (password auth disabled).
Azure integration: Azure Linux Agent, Trusted Launch + Secure Boot, Azure Monitor Agent, Azure Batch, VM Scale Sets, Azure Backup, and Azure VM Run Command all attach via standard extensions with no compatibility shims.
