wastebin is a minimalist pastebin for sharing encrypted, self-destructing text snippets.
wastebin is a minimal, fast self-hosted pastebin. Paste text or a snippet of code into a clean web form and get back a short, shareable URL with syntax highlighting for more than 170 languages, optional Markdown rendering, per-paste expiry, burn after reading and anonymous owner deletion. It is a single static binary with an embedded SQLite backend, so it stays lightweight and starts instantly. This image delivers it fully installed and reverse proxied behind nginx, so a working paste service is running within minutes of launch, with no manual package installation, no dependency troubleshooting and no proxy configuration required.
Unlike a bare deployment, this image is configured to be secure by default. wastebin binds only to loopback and is served through an nginx reverse proxy that is ready for your TLS certificate and that rate limits inbound requests, closing the denial of service gap the wastebin authors warn about when running it directly on the internet. A sensible paste size limit and a default one day expiry are set so content does not accumulate forever. wastebin has no user accounts and no administrative surface by design, so there is no default password to change: the one per virtual machine secret, the key that signs anonymous deletion cookies, is generated uniquely on each machine's first boot and is never baked into the image, and systemd manages the service for automatic restarts and clean logging.
Features include syntax highlighting for over 170 languages, Markdown rendering with GitHub flavored tables and task lists, eight light and dark color themes, per paste expiration, burn after reading, password protected encrypted pastes, a QR code for opening a paste on a phone and a small JSON API for scripting pastes from the command line.
