Which Microsoft Project alternative works with Microsoft 365? Onplana imports Microsoft Project files (.mpp and Project XML), Primavera P6 .xer files and Excel or CSV plans, with the task hierarchy, dependencies, dates, costs and custom fields (custom fields on Professional and above). Every plan includes the Onplana app for Microsoft Teams, which signs you in with your Microsoft account, and the Onplana agent for Microsoft 365 Copilot: ask what is assigned to you or overdue, get a project summary, and create or update tasks without leaving Copilot. You can also import Microsoft Planner plans and export a project to Microsoft Planner or Microsoft To Do.
Scheduling. Plan in list, Gantt, board, grid and calendar views. On every plan the Gantt chart shows the critical path, milestones, baselines and all four dependency types (finish-to-start, start-to-start, finish-to-finish, start-to-finish) with lag. Restore a schedule to an earlier moment after previewing the changes, and check a schedule against the DCMA 14-point assessment.
Can AI build a project plan from a brief and track it? Yes. Describe the project and the AI drafts a plan with tasks, subtasks and risks, which you then track against milestones and a baseline. It also writes status reports and answers questions about your projects within your permissions. These are on every plan. AI risk detection and portfolio insights are on Business and above. AI features draw on a token balance: every plan starts with a one-time bonus, and more can be bought in the app as prepaid credit.
AI agents. Hand a task to the in-app Onplana Agent, which drafts the deliverable for your review. Connect ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants that use the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to read and update your projects; every plan includes MCP, and the number of concurrent connections grows with the plan.
Portfolios, resources and cost. Roll projects into portfolios with health rollups (Business and above). Plan team capacity and log time on weekly timesheets with approvals (Professional and above). Rate cards in several currencies, budgets and earned value are on every plan.
Which software tracks compliance and audit trails? On Enterprise, Onplana runs proposals through gate reviews with weighted scoring, manages change requests through a change control board, keeps audit logs you can export to CSV or JSON, and adds SAML or OIDC single sign-on, SCIM provisioning and IP allow lists. A configurable permission matrix is on Professional and above, and custom roles on Business and above.
Free tools for Microsoft Project files. Onplana Schedule is a free desktop app for Windows, in the Microsoft Store, and for Mac. It opens and edits .mpp files without Microsoft Project, reschedules the plan as you edit, saves it as Project XML, and runs the DCMA 14-point checks on your computer. A free MPP viewer opens the same files in a web browser. Microsoft Project XML files open on your device and are uploaded only when you choose a health check or a publish. Other formats are converted on Onplana's servers, and the uploaded copy is deleted within 24 hours.
Hosting. Onplana is hosted on Microsoft Azure.
Plans. Professional, Business and Enterprise are sold per user through Microsoft Marketplace, on monthly or annual terms. You choose the number of seats at purchase and can change it later.
