Self-hosted CI runner: GitHub Actions runner on Ubuntu 24.04, ready to register with your token.
GitHub Actions Self-Hosted Runner on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
A ready-to-register GitHub Actions self-hosted runner on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, built and hardened for the Azure Marketplace. The runner package and Docker are pre-installed under a dedicated service account; the VM only needs your repository or organization registration token to come online.
Who this is for: Engineering and platform teams running GitHub Actions who need self-hosted Linux runners on their own Azure network for private, faster, or specialized builds.
Target industries: ISVs, regulated industries requiring private-network CI, and any team running GitHub Actions workflows.
Value proposition: Operating self-hosted GitHub Actions runners means provisioning a host, installing the runner and Docker, and hardening it. This image does that for you:
- Pre-staged runner host — the GitHub Actions runner agent, Docker, and Git installed under a dedicated
ghrunnerservice account; register with your repo/org token - Container builds ready — Docker pre-installed so container-based workflow jobs run without additional setup
- Monthly patched & hardened — rebuilt each month from the upstream base with the latest OS security updates; hardened to Microsoft's Azure Marketplace certification standards before any version is published
- Ready to register — the runner application is extracted and its dependencies installed, so registration is one
config.shcommand as theghrunneraccount; one more command from your admin account (svc.sh install, run as root from the runner directory) installs it as a systemd service that starts on boot - Audit trail per release — build and certification evidence retained for every published image version, available for compliance audits and change-management documentation
Plans available:
- GitHub Actions Runner on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS — Gen2 — Trusted Launch-capable Gen2 VM image; free image (standard Azure compute and storage rates apply). GitHub is sold separately.
Supported software and integrations: GitHub.com and GitHub Enterprise, GitHub Actions, Docker, Azure Container Registry, Azure Monitor, Azure Virtual Network.
Recommended deployment: Standard_D2ads_v6 or larger; size to your build concurrency. Deploy into a private VNet and scale out by registering multiple runners to the same repo or organization. Register over SSH as described above, or deploy with the VM tags GithubUrl and GithubToken and first boot registers the runner and installs its service for you. Registration tokens expire after one hour.
