The Onplana Migration Tool is a free web tool that reads a Microsoft Project file (.mpp, .mpx, Project XML) or a Primavera P6 .xer schedule, shows what each part of the plan keeps in each destination, and lets you download it as Excel, CSV or Project XML with no account, or open it as a live project in Onplana.
How do I open an .mpp file without Microsoft Project? Upload it to the tool in a web browser. Nothing to install, and no account is needed to read the file or download it. The file is uploaded to Onplana's servers to be read. Download it as an Excel workbook, a CSV file or Project XML. To see the plan as a Gantt chart, the free MPP viewer opens .mpp files in a browser, and Onplana Schedule, a free desktop app for Windows and Mac, opens and edits them.
How do I keep a Microsoft Project schedule intact when I move it? Preview the move first. The tool reads the task hierarchy, dependencies, dates, percent complete, cost and custom fields, then scores every destination: how many tasks and dependencies carry over cleanly, and a plain-language note on each feature that is lost or needs a review.
Where your plan can go
- Onplana keeps the task hierarchy, all four dependency types with their lag, dates, percent complete, milestones, priorities, task notes, planned, fixed and baseline cost, and your custom field values. Enter your email, create a free Onplana account with that same email, and the plan opens as a live project. Constraints, deadlines and baseline dates come across when you import the file from Import inside Onplana. Creating or editing custom fields needs the Professional plan or higher.
- Microsoft Planner or Microsoft To Do: from your project in Onplana, choose Export to Microsoft, sign in with your Microsoft 365 account and approve access. Planner gets a new plan in the Microsoft 365 group you pick: each top-level task becomes a bucket holding the tasks beneath it, with their due dates, and Planner does not keep dependencies. To Do gets a new list of the plan's tasks with their due dates, without the summary tasks.
- A file: download Microsoft Excel, CSV or Microsoft Project XML right away, with no account.
- Project for the web and Microsoft Lists are scored in the preview so you can plan the move. The tool does not write to them.
How long does it take? The preview comes back on the same page once the file is read, and the downloads start right away. Moving into Onplana adds one step: creating a free account with the email you entered.
