Deploy a private, self-hosted network traffic monitor on your own Azure infrastructure in minutes - no manual installation, no shared credentials. This image delivers the ntopng community edition fully installed and hardened, with its Redis backing store already wired up, so the web dashboard is monitoring traffic the moment the VM boots.

Why This Image Instead of Manual Installation

Installing ntopng by hand means adding the vendor repository, installing ntopng and its mandatory Redis backing store, writing the configuration, choosing the monitored interface, and securing the default login. This image eliminates that operational burden:

A team wants real time and historical visibility of the traffic on a network segment - which hosts are talking, which applications they are using, and where the bandwidth is going. With this image they launch a VM, point ntopng at the interface or configure it as a NetFlow, sFlow or IPFIX collector, sign in with the per-VM admin password, and immediately see top talkers, per host and per flow statistics, Layer-7 application detection and alerts - all within their own VNet.

Application Stack

ntopng is a high speed, web based network traffic monitor: the next generation of the original ntop. It captures traffic from a network interface, identifies applications and protocols with deep packet inspection (nDPI), and presents per host and per flow statistics, top talkers, alerts and historical trends through an interactive web dashboard on port 3000. It can also act as a flow collector for NetFlow, sFlow and IPFIX exported by routers, switches and firewalls. Redis is installed as the mandatory in-memory backing store and runs on loopback; both services are enabled systemd units.

Secure By Default

A stock ntopng install ships with the well known admin / admin login. This image does not. No usable credential is baked into the image: a one shot first boot service generates a unique administrator password on every VM's first boot, stores it, and disables the default admin / admin login so only the per-VM credential authenticates. The web dashboard on port 3000 serves plain HTTP - restrict it to trusted networks and place TLS in front of it before production.

Getting Started

1. Launch the image on your chosen Azure VM size 2. Retrieve the generated admin password from the credentials file on the VM 3. Browse to the VM public IP on port 3000 and sign in as admin with that password 4. Point ntopng at the interface you want to watch, or configure it as a flow collector

Licensing and Pricing

ntopng community edition is licensed under GPL-3.0 and is free; there is no per-seat fee. Only the community, GPL build ships - the Pro and Enterprise tiers are not included. The cloudimg charge of 0.04 US dollars per vCPU hour covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance, and 24/7 expert support. The web dashboard on port 3000 is the administrative interface; restrict it to trusted networks and front it with TLS before production.
