Interactive Power BI Date Slicer with calendar selection, custom ranges, and quick date presets.

Date Range Picker - Smarter Date Filtering for Power BI

Date Range Picker is a calendar-based filter visual for Power BI that replaces the clunky native date slicer with a clean, intuitive UI your report users will actually enjoy. Pick a start date, pick an end date, hit Apply - every connected visual updates instantly. No sliders, no manual typing, no confusion.

Why Date Range Picker?

Power BI's built-in date slicer offers a slider bar - functional, but not user-friendly for non-technical audiences. Date Range Picker gives your stakeholders a familiar calendar interface, one-click quick periods, and an Apply/Cancel workflow that prevents accidental filter changes.

Key Features

  • Interactive Calendar UI: Click any start and end date on a visual calendar grid. Hover highlights, range shading, and today's date marker make selection effortless.
  •
  • 15 Quick Period Presets: Last 7 Days, Last 30 Days, This Month, Last Month, This Quarter, Last Quarter, This Year, Last Year, YTD, MTD, QTD, Last 3/6/12 Months - one click, filter applied.
  •
  • Collapsed & Expanded States: Compact bar on your dashboard. Expands to full calendar on click. Returns to compact after Apply.
  •
  • Manual Date Input: Type dates in MM/DD/YYYY format with built-in validation. Invalid entries flagged with a red border.
  •
  • Apply & Cancel Workflow: Changes only committed on Apply - safe for live presentations and executive dashboards.
  •
  • Bookmark Support: Selected date range and active quick period fully saved and restored with Power BI bookmarks.
  •
  • Report Theme Integration: Automatically inherits your Power BI report theme color across buttons, selected dates, and range backgrounds.
  •
  • Grayed-Out Unavailable Dates: Dates with no data appear dimmed and cannot be selected - prevents invalid filter states.

Common Use Cases

  • Sales Dashboards - Filter revenue, pipeline, or quota data by custom periods or quick presets like "Last Quarter"
  •
  • Financial Reports - Slice P&L, YTD comparisons, or month-to-date analysis with a single click
  •
  • Inventory Management - View stock levels or movement for any rolling date window
  •
  • HR Analytics - Filter headcount, attendance, or review cycle data by hiring periods
  •
  • Marketing Campaigns - Measure performance within exact start and end date windows
