Project Quay -- the open source container image registry that powers Quay.io
Project Quay is the upstream open source community project of Red Hat Quay: a container-native image registry for building, storing and distributing container images. It provides private repositories with fine-grained access control across users, organizations, teams and robot accounts, a standards-compliant OCI and Docker v2 registry API, tag lifecycle management with expiration, auto-pruning and immutable tags, repository mirroring and proxy-cache capability, and a complete REST API for automation. Project Quay is the same codebase that powers the public Quay.io service.
This image delivers Project Quay fully installed and reverse-proxied behind nginx, so a private container registry is operational within minutes of launch, with no manual PostgreSQL, Redis, storage or web server configuration. The full upstream service topology runs natively under systemd as an unprivileged service user: the web, registry and security-scanning application servers, the complete set of background workers for garbage collection, notifications, quota management and auto-pruning, plus PostgreSQL 16 and Redis 7 as managed system services. Large image pushes are supported out of the box, and registry storage lives on the instance disk under a single well-known path.
Secure by default: no administrator account and no shared password ship in the image. On first boot the instance address is configured automatically, fresh secret keys and a fresh database password are generated, the database is initialised empty, and a unique administrator account plus a scoped API access token are created and written to a root-only file on the instance. Anonymous access and open self-registration are disabled, so no two deployments ever share a secret and nothing is browsable without credentials.
