qBittorrent on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

qBittorrent is a free, open source BitTorrent client that offers the features power users expect without the bloat of heavier clients. This image runs qbittorrent-nox, the headless daemon, and exposes its full functionality through a modern browser based web interface: add torrents by file, URL or magnet link, organise them into categories, control bandwidth and scheduling, use the integrated search, subscribe to RSS feeds with automatic downloading, and watch transfer progress in real time. It delivers a private, self hosted download manager you run and control yourself, operational within minutes of launch.

Secure by default

A torrent client with an open web interface would let anyone who can reach it control your downloads. This image forces authentication for every client, including requests from localhost, so the interface is never open. A unique administrator password is generated on each virtual machine's first boot and written to a root only file, while only a salted PBKDF2 hash is stored in the configuration. There are no shared or default credentials and nothing is baked into the image, so no two deployments are ever the same.

Hardened and ready on first boot

• The web interface is served on port 80 by nginx, which reverse proxies to qbittorrent-nox bound to the loopback address on port 8080, so the client itself is never directly exposed.
• The qBittorrent profile, configuration and download library live on a dedicated data disk mounted at /var/lib/qbittorrent, provisioned automatically with every VM.
• BitTorrent peer connectivity uses port 6881 (TCP and UDP); open it in the network security group to accept incoming connections.
• qbittorrent-nox runs as an unprivileged system user under a hardened systemd unit, and an unauthenticated health endpoint is provided for load balancer probes.
