perfSONAR Toolkit - Open Network Measurement, by cloudimg
Deploy a full perfSONAR measurement point on your own Azure infrastructure in minutes - no manual installation, no default credentials. This image delivers the complete perfSONAR Toolkit installed from perfSONAR's official EL9 repository, hardened, and reverse-proxied behind Apache over TLS, so you can measure network performance immediately after the VM boots.
Why This Image Instead of Manual Installation
perfSONAR is a large, multi-service stack. Installing it by hand means configuring the perfSONAR repository, installing the measurement daemons, standing up an OpenSearch archive with its security layer, wiring Logstash and Grafana together, and provisioning credentials. This image eliminates that operational burden:
- The complete perfsonar-toolkit bundle: pScheduler, owamp and twamp, iperf3 and the throughput tools, the OpenSearch measurement archive, the Grafana dashboards and lookup-service registration
- Apache reverse proxy terminating TLS on port 443 in front of the dashboards and the measurement archive
- Secure by default: the public web front door stays closed until first boot completes, and a unique Grafana administrator password and a unique Toolkit administration password are generated on the first boot of every VM, with every archive credential regenerated per VM, so no default login ships
- The OpenSearch measurement archive binds to localhost only
- Immediate time-to-value: run a real measurement within minutes of the VM starting
- Ongoing expert support: 24/7 cloudimg engineers
Use Case: Measure and Troubleshoot Network Performance
perfSONAR runs active measurements between hosts to find where along a network path performance degrades, to prove a network is clean end to end, and to keep a long-term record of how links behave. Research and education networks, and enterprise infrastructure teams, use it to measure one-way latency and packet loss with owamp and twamp, throughput with iperf3, and round-trip time and path, then explore the results on dashboards.
Secure By Default
Unlike a bare deployment, this image ships locked down. Apache, the only public web front door, stays disabled at boot until the first-boot service completes, so no web login is ever reachable before credentials are rotated. On the first boot of every VM the image mints a unique Grafana administrator password and a unique Toolkit administration password, creates the Toolkit admin account fresh, and regenerates the entire OpenSearch archive credential set, writing the web passwords to a file readable only by root. There are no shared or default credentials baked into the image, and the OpenSearch measurement archive binds to localhost only.
Getting Started
1. Launch the image on your chosen Azure VM size (Standard_B2ms or larger recommended) 2. Read the per-VM credentials from /root/perfsonar-credentials.txt 3. Browse to the VM public IP over HTTPS to reach the perfSONAR dashboard 4. Run your first measurement from the command line, then configure regular tests against your perfSONAR partners
Licensing and Pricing
perfSONAR is licensed under Apache-2.0 and is free; there is no per-seat fee. The cloudimg charge of 0.04 US dollars per vCPU hour covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance, and 24/7 expert support. The self-signed certificate should be replaced with a CA-signed certificate for your own host before production.
cloudimg Support
24/7 technical support by email covers deployment, upgrades, TLS termination, and measurement configuration. Critical issues receive a one-hour average response time.
