Industrial IIoT gateway - Modbus, OPC-UA, Ethernet/IP to MQTT with a web dashboard
Neuron IIoT Gateway on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Neuron is an open-source industrial IIoT connectivity gateway that bridges operational technology and IT. It connects to industrial equipment and PLCs over south-bound field protocols such as Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC-UA and Ethernet/IP, normalises the collected tag data, and forwards it north-bound to MQTT brokers and cloud platforms in real time - all managed from a bundled web dashboard and REST API.
What the cloudimg image gives you
- Neuron 2.15.0 (LGPL-3.0) installed from the pinned upstream release and run as a hardened systemd service
- The web dashboard and REST API, bound to loopback behind an nginx reverse proxy on port 80
- A unique dashboard admin password generated on the first boot of every VM and stored in a root-only file - the factory default is rotated before port 80 opens
- A live end-to-end demo on first boot: a local Modbus simulator streams a real register value through the gateway onto an MQTT topic, so you see the pipeline working immediately
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched, with unattended security updates enabled
Licensing - LGPL-3.0, free. No per-tag or per-device fee. The cloudimg charge ($0.04 per vCPU/hour) covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 support.
Getting started. Deploy the VM, allow ports 22 and 80, retrieve the per-VM dashboard password from the root-only file, and sign in to add your own south-bound devices and north-bound MQTT brokers. Recommended size: Standard_B2s to start; scale up for many devices or high tag volumes.
