miniserve on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

by cloudimg

A small fast self hosted HTTP file server: browse, download and upload files, secure by default

miniserve is a small, fast, self-hosted HTTP file server. Point it at a directory and it gives you a clean web interface to browse the folder, download individual files, download whole folders as tar.gz or zip archives, and upload new files or create directories straight from the browser. It is a single static binary with no database, no external services and no accounts system, so it starts instantly and stays lightweight. This image delivers it fully installed and reverse proxied behind nginx, so a working file server is running within minutes of launch, with no manual package installation, no dependency troubleshooting and no proxy configuration required.

Unlike a bare deployment, this image is configured to be secure by default. Upstream miniserve is public with no authentication; here HTTP basic authentication is required, miniserve binds only to loopback and is served through an nginx reverse proxy that is ready for your TLS certificate, and it serves only a dedicated directory rather than the whole filesystem. There is no default password to change: the per virtual machine password is generated uniquely on each machine's first boot and is never baked into the image, only its hash is stored in the service configuration, and the plaintext is written to a root only file on the instance. systemd manages the service for automatic restarts and clean logging.

Features include a clean directory listing with light and dark themes, downloading folders as tar, tar.gz or zip archives, uploading files and creating directories from the browser, a small dedicated serving directory that is easy to fill with your own content, and a reverse proxy that is ready for TLS and large file transfers.
