MediaWiki on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS by cloudimg

MediaWiki is the open-source wiki engine that powers Wikipedia and thousands of knowledge bases worldwide. This cloudimg image runs MediaWiki 1.43 LTS on a full LAMP stack from the Ubuntu 24.04 repositories (nginx, PHP 8.3-FPM and MariaDB). The entire install is performed headlessly at build time, so there is no web wizard - the wiki answers on port 80 the moment the VM boots. The database and uploads live on a dedicated Azure data disk, and a unique admin account plus fresh secret keys are generated on the first boot of every VM. Backed by 24/7 expert support.

Collaborative Knowledge Base

Page histories, talk pages, categories, full-text search and a large extension ecosystem - the same engine behind Wikipedia, with short article URLs and a sample Main Page to start editing immediately.

Dedicated Data Disk

The MariaDB database and the wiki uploads (the images directory) live on a dedicated, independently resizable Azure data disk at /var/lib/mediawiki, separate from the OS disk and re-provisioned with every VM.

Secure First Boot

On the first boot of every VM the database password, the MediaWiki secret keys ($wgSecretKey/$wgUpgradeKey) and a unique administrator account are generated and written to /root/mediawiki-credentials.txt. No shared credentials ship in the image.

Getting Started

Deploy from the Azure Marketplace or the Azure CLI, allow ports 22 and 80, then SSH in and read the per-VM administrator password with sudo cat /root/mediawiki-credentials.txt. Browse to your public IP, sign in, and start building your wiki. MediaWiki serves plain HTTP on port 80 - front it with TLS and your own domain before production.

Use Cases

Team and company knowledge bases, documentation wikis, community wikis, and a self-hosted deployment of the engine behind Wikipedia.
