Lidarr on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

by cloudimg

Self hosted music collection manager, behind a per instance authenticating reverse proxy.

Lidarr is the open source music collection manager of the arr family. Point it at your indexers and download clients and it monitors your favourite artists, automatically grabs and organises new releases, renames and tags tracks to a consistent scheme, and keeps your library tidy, all through a modern browser interface and a full REST API for automation. It is an ideal way to run an automated, self hosted music library on infrastructure you control. This image delivers it fully installed and hardened so a working instance is operational within minutes of launch.

Secure by default

Lidarr's own default leaves authentication disabled, which would leave the interface open to anyone who can reach it. This image closes that off: Lidarr binds to loopback only, and the sole reachable interface is an nginx reverse proxy on port 80 protected by HTTP Basic authentication. A unique sign in password is generated on each virtual machine's first boot and stored as a bcrypt hash for nginx, while the plain password is placed in a root only file for the administrator to read. Lidarr's API key is also regenerated on first boot, so no shared or default credential and no shared API key is ever baked into the image, and no two deployments are the same.

Hardened and ready on first boot

  • Lidarr is served behind nginx on port 80, which reverse proxies to Lidarr bound to loopback on port 8686; an unauthenticated health endpoint is exposed at /ping for load balancer probes.
  • All Lidarr state, its configuration, the SQLite databases, artwork cache and backups, lives on a dedicated data disk mounted at /var/lib/lidarr, provisioned automatically with every VM.
  • Lidarr ships as a self contained application with its own bundled runtime, running as an unprivileged system user under systemd.
  • The base is fully patched with unattended security upgrades enabled.
