kiwix-serve is the open source, self-hosted offline content server from the Kiwix project. It serves ZIM archives - self contained, compressed snapshots of Wikipedia, StackExchange, Project Gutenberg, wikis and other websites - through a built in library and reader web UI, with full text search, and needs no internet connection once the archives are in place. It suits schools, libraries, clinics, ships and field teams that need reliable access to reference knowledge where connectivity is limited or absent.

The cloudimg image installs the official statically linked kiwix-tools release, bound to loopback and fronted by nginx on port 80 with an unauthenticated /healthz endpoint for load balancer probes. A small sample archive, the top hundred English Wikipedia articles, is bundled so the library works the moment the VM boots; you can add your own ZIM files at any time and the server reloads them automatically.

No default login. kiwix-serve has no native authentication, so cloudimg protects the library with HTTP Basic Auth whose password is generated uniquely on the first boot of every VM. There is no credential baked into the image, no library is exposed without a password, and no secret is shared across VMs or known at image capture.
