Deluge on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Deluge is a popular, lightweight, cross platform open source BitTorrent client. It uses a client and server design: a background daemon handles all downloading and seeding, while a clean browser based Web UI lets you add torrents and magnet links, organise downloads, and set bandwidth and connection limits from anywhere. It is an efficient, low overhead way to run a private, always on download and seeding server on infrastructure you control. This image delivers Deluge fully installed and secured so a working client is operational within minutes of launch.

Secure by default

A standard Deluge Web UI ships with a well known default password, which would leave an unprotected deployment open to anyone who can reach it. This image does not rely on it. The daemon and Web UI are bound to the loopback interface only and placed behind an nginx reverse proxy that enforces HTTP basic authentication on every request, and the Web UI password, the daemon connection secret and the basic authentication credential are all rotated to unique random values on each virtual machine's first boot. Only one way hashes are written to the server, while the plain password is placed in a root only file for the administrator to read. There are no shared or default credentials and nothing usable is baked into the image, so no two deployments are ever the same.

Hardened and ready on first boot

• The Web UI is served over HTTPS on port 443 by nginx, which terminates TLS with a self signed certificate regenerated per VM on first boot, and reverse proxies to Deluge bound to loopback only. Port 80 redirects to HTTPS.
• An unauthenticated health endpoint is provided for load balancer probes; every other path requires the per instance credential.
• The daemon and Web UI run as an unprivileged system user under systemd for automatic restarts and clean logging.
• The Web UI is pre configured to auto connect to the local daemon, so a working client is ready the moment you sign in.
