Comentario on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Comentario is a fast, flexible and powerful free comment server for web pages, a privacy-focused, self-hosted alternative to hosted commenting services such as Disqus. This cloudimg image runs Comentario 3.17 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS: a single, self-contained Go service serves both the embeddable comments widget you drop into any website and a full administration UI, all backed by PostgreSQL. It suits blogs, publications, documentation sites and product teams that want to own their readers' comments and data rather than hand them to a third party.

Comment threads support Markdown, nested replies, voting and moderation, multiple sign-in options for commenters, per-domain configuration and a full API for automation. As the instance owner you get a superuser administration console to manage domains, pages, users, comments and instance settings, and public status and analytics for each domain you connect.

Security is built in. The image ships with an empty database and no working credentials baked in. On first boot the VM rotates the PostgreSQL password to a unique per-VM value and creates the instance owner and administrator account through Comentario's own signup flow, with a strong per-VM password written to a root-only credentials file, so every VM you deploy has its own owner login and there is no default credential to leak. The service runs as a dedicated non-root system user, and PostgreSQL is bound to loopback only.
