Availability

ChatGPT for Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are generally available.

ChatGPT for Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are available to Business, Enterprise, Edu, and K-12 users globally, and to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro.

Access may vary by plan, region, workspace settings, Microsoft 365 environment, and admin controls. After installing the app, sign in with the OpenAI account associated with your plan.

What you can do:

In Excel

- Build spreadsheets from scratch

- Edit and update existing workbooks

- Ask questions across tabs, formulas, tables, and data

- Generate formulas, explanations, and summaries you can review

- Use skills for repeatable workflows and output formats

- Use apps to bring connected data sources into the Excel workflow

- Review formulas, citations, and changed cells

In PowerPoint

- Create new decks and slides from prompts, notes, documents, spreadsheets, images, and existing presentations

- Edit and improve existing decks by rewriting slides, adding sections, tightening hierarchy, and updating speaker notes when supported

- Ask questions about your deck's story, structure, gaps, and audience fit

- Turn tables and source material into slide content, charts, diagrams, callouts, and summaries when supported

- Preserve editable slide structure where supported so you can keep working in PowerPoint

- Use skills and apps for templates, repeatable workflows, and trusted source material

In Word

- Create documents from prompts, notes, outlines, and source material

- Edit and improve existing documents, from individual sentences to entire sections

- Ask questions about your document’s content, structure, clarity, and gaps

- Generate outlines, drafts, explanations, and summaries you can review

- Refine formatting and add tables, charts, and footnotes when supported

- Adapt writing for different audiences, tones, and levels of detail

- Use skills for templates, repeatable workflows, and consistent output formats

- Use apps to bring connected sources and reference material into the Word workflow

Current limitations

- Review AI actions carefully: ChatGPT can make changes in spreadsheets and presentations. Monitor changes closely to avoid unintended edits, including editing or deleting content.

- Skills from ChatGPT don’t automatically carry over to the add-in experience.

- Verify important numbers, formulas, citations, and claims with primary sources before relying on them.

- Some advanced PowerPoint capabilities may not be supported yet, including native chart editing, deeper shape and formatting controls, animations, complex templates, and custom font handling.

- Chats in the Microsoft add-ins operate separately from ChatGPT.com conversations and do not sync with ChatGPT chat history. Memory is not available in the add-ins.

Verify formulas, numbers, citations, and claims with primary sources. ChatGPT can make mistakes, including making unintended edits or deleting content if a request is unclear. Data sharing: ChatGPT for Microsoft apps respects your ChatGPT data training preferences. Some data, including chats, attachments, workbook content, and presentation content, may be shared with Microsoft and OpenAI to enable reading and updating your files.
