SUSE Linux Enterprise HPC 15 SP7 Gen2 VM

por Derek Coleman & Associates Corporation

SUSE Linux Enterprise HPC 15 SP7 VM for Azure compute nodes: HPC module registered, SSH-key login.

You get SUSE Linux Enterprise High Performance Computing (SLE HPC) 15 SP7 on an Azure Generation 2 VM, built from SUSE's own SLE HPC 15 SP7 image and fully patched when the image was built. Sign in over SSH with your key at first boot; SSH is the only port listening publicly.

Who it's for

  • Research, engineering and simulation teams that run their compute nodes on SUSE
  • HPC administrators who build their own cluster stack (scheduler, MPI, storage) on SLE HPC
  • Teams that already run SLE HPC 15 on premises and want the same release on Azure

What's included

  • SLE HPC 15 SP7: the operating system reports SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP7, with SUSE's kernel 6.4 (6.4.0-150700.53.81)
  • HPC Module, SUSE's repository of HPC software such as the Slurm workload manager and MPI libraries (Message Passing Interface, for parallel jobs), registered for your VM when it registers itself with SUSE's update servers at first boot. Install the components your cluster needs with zypper (SUSE's package manager).
  • Azure Linux Agent (the service Azure uses to provision and manage the VM) and cloud-init (the tool that applies your deployment settings at first boot)

After deployment

  • Sign in over SSH (port 22) as the admin user with the key you set in the portal. When you deploy with a key, password sign-in over SSH is refused.
  • Nothing shared ships in the image: root has no usable password, the build account and the build's SUSE registration are removed, and SSH host keys and the machine ID are created fresh on your VM. Your VM registers itself with SUSE's public-cloud update servers at first boot, so zypper can install updates right away.
  • Open cluster ports yourself in the network security group (NSG, the firewall rules Azure applies to your VM).
  • The image does not install updates automatically, so schedule your own patching with zypper.

Why this image

  • Patched at build: on 12 October 2026 every available SUSE patch was applied, the VM was rebooted, a second patch pass ran, and the build would have stopped if the kernel package were not fully up to date or if any security update were still pending.
  • Tested on a real VM: a weekly test deploys the image as a Trusted Launch VM (Secure Boot plus a virtual TPM, Azure's boot-integrity protections) and checks SSH, provisioning, first-boot cleanup, pending updates and open ports. On 7 October 2026 it finished booting in under 60 seconds on a 2-vCPU Standard_D2s_v3.

How it runs on Azure

The VM runs in your own Azure subscription and virtual network, on any VM size that supports Generation 2. Billing is pay-as-you-go on your Azure invoice and includes this offer's hourly software charge per vCPU (see Plans + Pricing) as well as Azure compute and storage. This offer is provided by Derek Coleman & Associates Inc, not by SUSE.
