specgit: GitHub native real-time document collaboration for your whole team

specgit is a GitHub native document editor that gives every document and Canvas board in your repository a live collaboration room, and eliminates the complexity of Git. Product managers, researchers, technical writers, and engineers write, comment, and review in it together, in real time, in a visual editor, and their agents can join them. GitHub stays the home for what comes after: every save is a commit under the writer's own name, every comment is a pull request review thread, approvals are GitHub reviews, and publishing merges the pull request. It works the same for an Obsidian vault in GitHub.

What your team gets

• Write together in real time. Everyone sees each other's cursors and edits as they happen, and edits never conflict, so nobody waits a turn or overwrites a teammate.
• A visual editor anyone can use. Format as in any word processor: tables, images, code, callouts, diagrams drawn from text, math, footnotes, highlights, checklists, and links between notes. specgit saves clean Markdown, so a team can edit an Obsidian vault together.
• A quiet place to write. Writing mode clears away the toolbar and leaves you alone with the page. When a sentence won't settle, Riff holds every option of it in place, so you can swap each one in, read it in context, and keep the one that reads right.

Why keep documents in GitHub?

If your team uses GitHub, its documents belong next to the code, where engineers and coding agents find them. A document changes through the same review as the code it describes, so it stays accurate.

Common questions

Do I need to know Git or Markdown?

No. Editors only sign in with their own GitHub account.

Do my engineers have to change anything?

No. Documents are ordinary Markdown files in your repository, and a save changes only what you edited: every line you didn't touch keeps its bytes, so the commit shows only your change.

Our documents aren't in GitHub yet. Can we still use specgit?

Yes. Start in an empty repository, upload Markdown, or import Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and PDF files. An Obsidian vault in a GitHub repository opens as it is.

Do you keep my documents?

What does my IT admin need to do?

Install the specgit GitHub App once, on the repositories you choose, with per-repository permissions and no separate password. See the guide for your IT admin.
