Zen Notes on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Zen (published here as Zen Notes to disambiguate the generic upstream name) is an open source, self-hosted notes application built as a single Go binary. Every note is stored as standard Markdown inside a local SQLite database, with full-text search, flexible tags, templates, pinned and archived notes, and image uploads - a fast, low-resource personal knowledge base you run entirely under your own control.
What cloudimg delivers
- Zen 1.5.0 built from source (AGPL-3.0) as a single self-contained binary, bound to loopback and fronted by nginx terminating TLS on port 443 (port 80 redirects to HTTPS)
- A per-VM administrator credential generated at first boot - no default or shared login ships in the image, and a wrong or blank password is rejected
- The SQLite database and uploaded images on a dedicated Azure data disk, separate from the OS disk and independently resizable
- Fully patched Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with unattended security updates enabled

Licensing
Zen is free and open source under AGPL-3.0. There is no per-CPU or per-seat software fee. The cloudimg charge (0.04 US dollars per vCPU/hour) covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 support.
Recommended sizing
Standard_B2s (2 vCPU, 4 GB) is a comfortable starting point; scale up for large note or image volumes.
Getting started
Deploy the VM, open ports 22, 80 and 443 in your NSG, read the per-VM administrator password from /root/zen-notes-credentials.txt over SSH, then browse to the VM public IP over HTTPS and sign in.
