Pre-hardened Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS

Pre-hardened Ubuntu 20.04 LTS VM optimized for secure Azure production workloads.

Pre-hardened Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS on Azure

A production-ready Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS (“Focal Fossa”) image, built and hardened for the Azure Marketplace. Focal is the long-term-stability choice: a mature, battle-tested LTS whose package set and kernel ABI have been frozen and patched for years, with Ubuntu Pro extended support carrying it past standard end-of-life. When you have legacy apps certified against 20.04, vendor agents that only ship Focal packages, or a compliance baseline pinned to this release, this image gives you that exact base — pre-integrated with Azure and certified to Microsoft Marketplace standards — without forcing an upgrade.

Who this is for: Operators maintaining long-lived production systems on 20.04, teams running third-party software certified only against Focal, and platform engineers who need a stable, slow-moving LTS base where “newest” is a liability, not a feature.

Target industries & use cases: Financial services and insurance (long certification cycles), healthcare and government (frozen compliance baselines), industrial and embedded backends, and ISVs supporting customers who cannot move off 20.04 yet — legacy app hosting, lift-and-shift migrations, extended-support maintenance estates.

Value proposition: Keeping a secure 20.04 host on Azure means installing the Azure Linux Agent, configuring Trusted Launch, tracking ESM/Pro CVEs, hardening the base, and validating against Microsoft certification. This image does all of that for you:

  • Monthly patch cadence — each version is rebuilt from upstream Ubuntu 20.04 security updates (including ESM/Pro coverage) within days of release
  • 33 documented hardening traps applied — every version is gated through an automated trap-audit covering Trusted Launch, sysprep race conditions, Defender pre-installation, hardening-script residue, and 29 more
  • Trusted Launch + Secure Boot enabled by default — Gen2 image with vTPM and signed-boot configured per Microsoft’s OEM requirements
  • Azure Linux Agent pre-installed and pre-configuredwalinuxagent.service is running; custom-script and run-command work on first boot
  • Audit trail per release — build provenance and certification evidence retained for every published version

How this differs from rolling your own: The stock Focal cloud image works for a single dev VM but lacks the Azure-specific hardening (serial console locked down, root SSH disabled, audit logging) production needs — and self-managing the extended-support patch stream on an aging LTS is exactly the toil teams want to avoid. This image tracks Focal CVEs for you every month so the legacy base stays patched without a distro upgrade. Aligned with our 22.04 and 24.04 LTS images for one fleet playbook.

Recommended deployment: Standard_D2as_v5 or larger for general-purpose legacy workloads; Standard_E2as_v5 or larger for memory-heavy databases. Premium SSD for data disks. Front public web workloads with Azure Application Gateway with TLS termination. SSH key authentication required.

Azure integration: Azure Linux Agent, Trusted Launch + Secure Boot, Azure Monitor Agent, Azure Backup, Azure Disk Encryption, Defender for Servers, and Azure VM Run Command all attach via standard extensions with no compatibility shims.
