Deploy Trusted Launch SQL Server 2019 on Windows Server for production database workloads.
You get Microsoft SQL Server 2019 on Windows Server 2019 Datacenter or Windows Server 2022 Datacenter, as Generation 2 Azure VM images built from Microsoft's own SQL Server 2019 images. Each plan installs exactly the edition in its name: Enterprise, Standard or Web, plus a Windows Server 2022 plan with the Enterprise database engine only.
Who it's for
- DBAs who keep applications on SQL Server 2019 and want them on Azure VMs they control
- Teams that need SQL Server 2019 on a newer Windows Server (2022) or that must match existing Windows Server 2019 hosts
- Web application teams that run SQL Server Web edition
What's included
- On Windows Server 2019 Datacenter: SQL Server 2019 Enterprise, Standard and Web plans
- On Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: SQL Server 2019 Enterprise, Enterprise database engine only, Standard and Web plans
- Database engine only: the SQL Server Database Engine without Reporting, Analysis or Integration Services
- Windows updates and SQL Server updates from Microsoft Update, installed when each image is built
- Generation 2 images with Trusted Launch (Secure Boot plus a virtual TPM) supported
After deployment
- Connect with Remote Desktop (RDP, port 3389) as the administrator you set in the portal.
- For remote SQL clients, allow TCP 1433 from your application subnet only, in Windows Firewall and in your Azure network security group (NSG, the firewall rules Azure applies to your VM).
- Apply your organization's backup, update and security policies before production use.
Why this image
- Plan name and installed edition match: each plan is built from Microsoft's SQL Server 2019 image of that edition, and test deployments confirm the running edition
- Developer edition is not sold here, because it is not licensed for production use
- No build scripts are left on the disk: the build stops if any remain
How it runs on Azure
A virtual machine in your own subscription and virtual network (VNet). Requirement: a Generation 2 VM size. Charges are pay-as-you-go on your Azure invoice; see Plans + Pricing for each plan. Microsoft, Windows Server and SQL Server are trademarks of the Microsoft group of companies.
