code-server Browser IDE on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS by ProvenCloud
by ProvenCloud
code-server on Azure: VS Code in your browser on your own cloud VM.
code-server on Azure, ready in minutes.
code-server runs a VS Code style editor on your own virtual machine and shows it in your browser. Open a laptop, a tablet or a borrowed computer, sign in, and your code, terminal and tools are right where you left them, running on the power of the cloud instead of your device.
Why teams choose this image
- A ready workbench: Node.js LTS, Python 3, Docker (no sudo needed), Git, GitHub CLI and Azure CLI are installed and working.
- Private by design: the editor listens only behind nginx over HTTPS, and the password is random for every VM.
- Extensions included: install extensions from Open VSX straight from the editor.
- Up to date: every component is on its latest stable release and the image carries all Ubuntu 24.04 LTS security updates, with nothing pending.
What is included
- code-server 4.144.0
- nginx serving HTTPS
- Node.js LTS, Python 3, Docker, Git, GitHub CLI, Azure CLI
- Webmin 2.670, reachable through an SSH tunnel
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched
Getting started
Open https://<vm-public-ip>/ (the first certificate is self-signed, so your browser shows a warning). The password is a random password made for this VM on its first boot. Read it over SSH with sudo pc-credentials show (the entry labelled codeserver). Your projects live in /home/ubuntu/workspace. Change the password with sudo bash ~/iscripts/pass_codeserver.sh.
Ports opened for you: SSH 22 and 80 and 443. For production, limit admin ports to your own IP address. Step-by-step guide: provencloud.io/catalog/azure-code-server-browser-ide-ubuntu-24-04
Who it is for
Developers, students and teams who want the same coding setup from any device, and companies that keep source code inside their own Azure subscription.
Pricing
The price shown is the software and packaging fee. Azure infrastructure charges for the virtual machine, disk and network are billed separately by Microsoft.
