OpenVPN Community Server with Web Admin on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS by ProvenCloud

by ProvenCloud

OpenVPN on Azure: private VPN server with a web admin panel for client profiles.

OpenVPN on Azure, ready in minutes. Deploy the virtual machine, open its public IP address in a browser and you are ready to go. There is no installer to run and nothing to configure.

OpenVPN is a proven open source VPN. This image turns an Azure VM into your own VPN server with a simple web panel: create a profile for each person or device, download the .ovpn file, import it into any OpenVPN app, and revoke access with one click. Traffic from connected devices leaves through your Azure VM, so your team gets one fixed address for allow-lists and safer use of public Wi-Fi.

Why teams choose this image

  • Easy to run: create, download and revoke client profiles from the browser, with no command line needed.
  • Every VM creates its own certificate authority, server certificate and TLS key on first boot, so no two servers share keys. The admin panel and Webmin passwords are set from your VM ID.
  • Up to date: every component is on its latest stable release and the image carries all Ubuntu 24.04 LTS security updates, with nothing pending.
  • Supports Trusted Launch with Secure Boot and vTPM. No build-time SSH keys or shell history are left in the image.

What is included

  • OpenVPN 2.7.8 from the official OpenVPN repository, on UDP port 1194
  • Easy-RSA 3.2.7 with a certificate authority created on each VM
  • ProvenCloud VPN Admin web panel over HTTPS
  • Webmin 2.670 for server administration
  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched

Getting started

Open https://<vm-public-ip>/, accept the warning for the VM's own certificate, and sign in as admin with your VM ID (Azure portal > the virtual machine > Properties > VM ID). Click Create client, then Download .ovpn and import it into any OpenVPN app. Open UDP port 1194 for the VPN.

Ports opened for you: SSH 22 and 1194/udp, 443, 80, 8000. For production, limit admin ports to your own IP address and add your domain with an SSL certificate. Step-by-step guide: provencloud.io/catalog/azure-openvpn-ubuntu-24-04
