BookStack Wiki and Documentation on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS by ProvenCloud

by ProvenCloud

BookStack on Azure: simple wiki for team documentation and knowledge bases.

BookStack on Azure, ready in minutes. Deploy the virtual machine, open its public IP address in a browser and you are ready to go. There is no installer to run and nothing to configure.

BookStack is a popular open source platform for organising and storing information. Teams use it as a wiki for internal documentation, how-to guides, policies, runbooks and knowledge bases, arranged in a simple structure of shelves, books, chapters and pages. This image gives IT teams, schools and businesses a working BookStack server in minutes, with no installer to run and no database to create.

Why teams choose this image

  • Simple, organised documentation: write pages in a WYSIWYG or Markdown editor, group them into books and shelves, search everything and control who can see what.
  • No shared default password: every VM sets its own passwords from its own VM ID on first boot, so no two customers share a login.
  • Up to date: every component is on its latest stable release and the image carries all Ubuntu 24.04 LTS security updates, with nothing pending.
  • Supports Trusted Launch with Secure Boot and vTPM. No build-time SSH keys or shell history are left in the image.

What is included

  • BookStack v26.09.2
  • Apache with PHP 8.3
  • MySQL 8.0
  • phpMyAdmin for database administration
  • Webmin 2.670 for server administration
  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched

Getting started

Open http://<vm-public-ip>/ and sign in with the email admin@example.com and your VM ID (Azure portal > the virtual machine > Properties > VM ID). phpMyAdmin (/phpmyadmin, user root) and Webmin (port 8000, user admin) use the same password. Allow about five minutes after the VM starts.

Ports opened for you: SSH 22 and 80, 8000. For production, limit admin ports to your own IP address and add your domain with an SSL certificate. Step-by-step guide: provencloud.io/catalog/azure-bookstack-ubuntu-24-04

Who it is for

IT teams, schools and businesses that want a simple wiki for internal documentation on their own server.
