NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP (CVO) - Enterprise Cloud Storage (deployment)

by NetApp

Enterprise cloud storage for file/block workloads with rich data services and optimized cost

NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP (CVO) provides an enterprise-grade file and block storage solution, combining Azure cloud infrastructure with rich data management, protection, replication, caching, and cyber resilience functionality of NetApp ONTAP storage operating system. Additionally, CVO supports multiprotocol access (NFS, SMB, iSCSI, NVMe/TCP) and built-in cost savings enabled by tiering, deduplication, compression, compaction, and thin provisioning.
Experience CVO firsthand with this free lightweight offering to test-drive CVO in under 10 minutes—no additional management tools required.

Key Benefits

  • Multiprotocol support: Manage primary file (NFS, SMB) and block (iSCSI, NVMe/TCP) workloads in the cloud with a single, software-defined storage system supporting also S3 protocol for object access.
  • High Availability and Reliability: Built on NetApp ONTAP, CVO delivers high availability, resilience, and fast data access across demanding workloads.
  • Rich data management: Benefit from enterprise-grade management capabilities like snapshots, fast clones, replication, and seamless data mobility to protect and manage workloads efficiently.
  • Cost optimization: Reduce cloud storage costs by up to 70% compared to native cloud storage using built-in efficiencies such as tiering, deduplication, compression, and thin provisioning.
  • Enterprise-grade security: Safeguard your data with at-rest and in-flight encryption, role-based access control, and advanced ransomware protection features.
  • Hybrid cloud ready: Seamlessly integrate with remote ONTAP systems (either on-prem or in other cloud providers) for backup, disaster recovery, and data mobility.
  • Frictionless deployment: Use your existing cloud infrastructure to deploy CVO in Azure—no agents or connectors needed.
  • Commitment-free trial: Deploy a free, lightweight version of CVO to test-drive its capabilities before scaling to production.

Key use cases and features

  • File storage for general purpose and application file sharing
  • Databases and Business apps: Supports relational and NoSQL databases with high performance.
  • Disaster recovery & backup: Cloud-based disaster recovery for both on-premises and cloud environments.
  • Test/Dev: Rapid creation of development and testing environments using FlexClone volumes.
  • Kubernetes & Containers: Persistent storage for Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native apps.
  • Secondary workloads: Supplementary workloads for development and testing environments.

Getting Started

You can get started with your direct deployment of Cloud Volumes ONTAP® in just a few steps directly through the Microsoft Azure Marketplace portal. From this page:
  1. Click the `Create` prompt that is highlighted at the top of the listing page.
  2. You will then be directed to the offering page. Select a plan.
  3. Follow the highlighted steps to finalize your basic configuration selections, including networking, security, and tags.
  4. Click Review + Create to deploy Cloud Volumes ONTAP®.
  5. Upon successful deployment, you’ll receive a login prompt. After you log in (with your configured username and password), you are ready to go and can begin creating volumes (for NFS), LUNs (for iSCSI), or shares (for CIFS).
Note: You can use NetApp ONTAP System Manager or CLI to perform ONTAP upgrades and other configuration changes.

Support

As a Freemium deployment of Cloud Volumes ONTAP® with no time limit, this offering does not include NetApp Customer Support. More details on prerequisites and support can be found in the technical documentation.
