Trial Commander for Outlook

by iHOST LABS, LLC

File email to litigation matters, capture court deadlines and log time from Outlook

Trial Commander for Outlook connects your inbox to your litigation matters.

• File email to a matter: log the open email to a matter's communication history, and save its attachments to the matter's documents.

• Deadline capture: reads the open email for dates and court language, then proposes deadlines, with the trigger it found, for you to confirm.

• One-click time: "Log 0.2 for this email", with the narrative drafted from the subject and task codes defaulted. You can edit it before it saves.

• Attach from the matter: while you write an email, attach a document from a matter's files.

• Send check: before an email goes, a warning when an outside recipient isn't a contact on the matter, or when an attachment matches a document marked privileged.

About the send check (automatic activation and Smart Alerts)

• When it runs: only when you select Send on an email. It is the add-in's one automatic action; it does not run when you open, read or write an email. It needs an Outlook that supports Smart Alerts (Outlook on the web; new Outlook for Windows; classic Outlook for Windows, version 2206 or later; new Outlook for Mac, version 16.65 or later), the add-in deployed by your Microsoft 365 administrator, and your Trial Commander sign-in in the add-in on that Outlook.

• What it reads: the email addresses in To, Cc and Bcc, and the file names of the attachments. It sends them to Trial Commander, which compares them with your firm's matter contacts and with the documents your firm keeps in a privileged or work-product folder or names as privileged. It does not read the message body or the contents of any attachment, and it keeps nothing it reads.

• What it does: if an outside recipient is not a contact on the matter the other recipients belong to, or an attachment looks privileged, Outlook shows a Smart Alert that names it, with "Send anyway" and "Don't send". Otherwise you see nothing. It never inserts anything into your email, never changes its recipients or attachments, and never stops you from sending: "Send anyway" is always one click. If you are not signed in to the add-in on that Outlook, or the check cannot finish within about three seconds (for example, on a slow connection), the email is sent as usual. If Outlook itself can't run the add-in (for example, while offline), Outlook may show its own "Send anyway" choice instead.

Requires a Trial Commander account. Sign up free at trialcommander.com. Some features depend on your firm's plan.
