K3s Lightweight Kubernetes on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
A production-ready K3s lightweight, CNCF-certified Kubernetes distribution on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, built and hardened for the Azure Marketplace. K3s is installed from the sha256-verified upstream binary as a single-node cluster, enabled as a systemd service, and ready to schedule workloads on first boot.
Who this is for: Platform engineers, DevOps teams, and developers who need a low-overhead Kubernetes cluster on Azure for edge, CI, dev/test, or single-node production without assembling the control plane by hand.
Target industries: ISVs, IoT and edge operators, software teams, and any organization running containerized workloads in their own Azure subscription.
Value proposition: Standing up a secure, patch-current Kubernetes node on Azure means installing the runtime, configuring the control plane, and hardening the host. This image does that for you:
- K3s v1.31.4+k3s1 single-node cluster — the sha256-verified upstream binary, CNCF-certified Kubernetes, running as a managed systemd service with the API server on port 6443
- Per-VM cluster credentials — the cluster token and kubeconfig are generated on the customer VM at first boot, never baked into the image
- Monthly patched & hardened — rebuilt each month from the upstream base with the latest OS security updates; hardened to Microsoft's Azure Marketplace certification standards before any version is published
- Ready to run — the service is installed, enabled, and configured to start on boot, so the VM is productive minutes after deployment instead of after a manual install
- Audit trail per release — build and certification evidence retained for every published image version, available for compliance audits and change-management documentation
Plans available:
- K3s on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS — Gen2 — Trusted Launch-capable Gen2 VM image; free image (standard Azure compute and storage rates apply). K3s is open-source software under the Apache-2.0 license.
Supported software and integrations: Azure Monitor, Azure Virtual Network, Azure Load Balancer; standard kubectl and Helm tooling.
Recommended deployment: Standard_D2as_v5 or larger; Premium SSD for the data volume. Use the firstboot-generated kubeconfig to connect kubectl; front workloads with Azure Load Balancer for ingress.
