Augmented and Virtual Reality Service

by pcloudhosting

Version 1.0.47 + Free Support on Ubuntu 26.04

Augmented and Virtual Reality Service is an OpenXR-compliant XR runtime environment built using the latest Monado OpenXR Runtime. It provides a standardized platform for developing, testing, and running Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications on Ubuntu Linux. The service implements the OpenXR specification, allowing compatible applications to communicate with supported XR devices through a unified API while eliminating the need for vendor-specific SDKs.

This installation is configured with Monado Runtime v25.1.0, OpenXR Loader v1.1.47, Vulkan rendering support, and the OpenXR runtime configuration. The environment supports both simulated and compatible physical XR devices, making it suitable for application development, testing, prototyping, and deployment of immersive experiences. The service also includes runtime management utilities for validating the OpenXR environment and verifying runtime availability.

Features of Augmented and Virtual Reality Service:

  • OpenXR 1.0 compliant runtime powered by Monado Runtime v25.1.0.
  • OpenXR Loader v1.1.47 for application and runtime integration.
  • Support for Vulkan and OpenGL graphics rendering.
  • Support for simulated XR devices for development and testing without physical hardware.
  • Compatible with supported physical XR headsets including SteamVR-compatible devices, PlayStation VR2, Windows Mixed Reality, Oculus Rift, Rift S, XREAL Air, and other supported OpenXR devices.
  • Support for multiple OpenXR extensions including hand tracking, eye gaze interaction, controller interaction, quad views, overlay layers, visibility masks, and advanced composition layers.
  • Runtime configuration through the OpenXR Runtime JSON.
  • Runtime validation utilities for verifying OpenXR installation and runtime availability.
  • Suitable for AR/VR application development, simulation environments, immersive visualization, XR research, and OpenXR application testing.

To verify that the Augmented and Virtual Reality Service environment is installed and functioning correctly, use the following steps:

Navigate to the Monado installation directory:
$ cd /opt/monado/build
$mkdir -p /run/user/0
chmod 700 /run/user/0
Configure the runtime environment:
$ export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/0
$ export XR_RUNTIME_JSON=/usr/local/share/openxr/1/openxr_monado.json

Start the OpenXR runtime service:
$ monado-service

Open a second terminal and configure the same environment variables:
$ export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/0
$ export XR_RUNTIME_JSON=/usr/local/share/openxr/1/openxr_monado.json

Verify the OpenXR runtime:
$ openxr_runtime_list

Display runtime information in JSON format:
$ openxr_runtime_list_json

Display Monado runtime information:
$ monado-cli info
Disclaimer:

Augmented and Virtual Reality Service is provided as a managed service. Application behavior, performance, and compatibility may vary depending on hardware, graphics drivers, and target devices. Users are responsible for ensuring proper device setup, secure access, and compliance with applicable policies when deploying AR and VR solutions. The service is best suited for immersive visualization, simulation, training, and interactive digital experience use cases.
