Pre-hardened Ubuntu Server 22.04 Minimal

by Derek Coleman & Associates Corporation

Pre-hardened Ubuntu 22.04 minimal-footprint VM for lightweight Azure workloads.

Deploy a lean, hardened Ubuntu server in minutes instead of spending days stripping and securing a full image yourself. Pre-hardened Ubuntu Server 22.04 Minimal is built on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Minimal — roughly 40% smaller than the standard server image — and cold-boots in under 15 seconds, so your scale-out workloads come online faster and cost less to run.

Why you'd choose this image

If you run container hosts, build agents, or edge nodes on full-size Ubuntu images, you pay for packages you never use — in disk, in boot time, and in attack surface you have to patch. This image removes that overhead before you ever deploy it.

  • ~40% smaller footprint than standard Ubuntu Server 22.04 — less disk, faster scale-out, quicker golden-image copies
  • Sub-15-second cold boot — autoscaling sets and ephemeral workloads respond sooner
  • Reduced attack surface — only essential packages ship, so there is less to exploit and less to patch
  • Hardened before first boot — SSH hardening, restrictive defaults, and a minimal package set are applied at build time, not left for you to script
  • Security-patched releases — image updates roll forward Ubuntu CVE fixes so new deployments start current

Ideal workloads

  • Container hosts and Kubernetes nodes that need minimal OS overhead
  • Ephemeral CI/CD build agents (continuous integration/continuous delivery) that boot, build, and terminate
  • Edge computing and IoT gateway deployments where every megabyte counts
  • Microservice and API backends that scale horizontally

Azure integration

This is a Generation 2 VM image with Trusted Launch support — enable Secure Boot and vTPM at deploy time for firmware-level protection. cloud-init runs your provisioning scripts on first boot, the Azure Linux Agent is pre-installed, and Azure Monitor, Defender for Cloud, and Update Manager extensions install cleanly. Deploy through the Azure portal, CLI, ARM/Bicep templates, or Terraform like any first-party image.

Technical specifications

  • Base OS: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Minimal (Jammy Jellyfish), x64 Generation 2
  • Security: Trusted Launch supported (Secure Boot + vTPM optional at deploy)
  • System requirements: runs comfortably from 1 GB RAM; Standard_B2s for light duty, Standard_D2as_v5 and up for production
  • Provisioning: cloud-init enabled; SSH key authentication by default

Pricing

Transparent usage-based pricing at $0.09 per vCPU per hour for the image, plus standard Azure infrastructure costs. No upfront commitment — deploy, test, and scale as you need.
