MongoDB Community Server on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

by Derek Coleman & Associates Corporation

MongoDB 7.0 on Ubuntu 24.04: auth on, per-VM admin password at first boot, localhost by default.

You get MongoDB Community Server 7.0, the document database, on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with access control already switched on. At first boot the VM creates its own administrator account with a generated password, restarts MongoDB with authorization enforced, and proves both that the login works and that anonymous clients are refused before setup is marked complete.

Who it's for

  • Developers who want a MongoDB server they fully control
  • Application teams that need a document database inside their own Azure virtual network
  • Teams replacing a hand-built MongoDB VM

What's included

  • MongoDB Community Server 7.0 (the mongod service) from MongoDB's own apt repository, with the mongosh shell and the database tools, running as a systemd service (starts automatically with the VM)
  • Access control on: authorization is enabled, so every client must sign in. The admin user holds the root role.
  • Local-only by default: MongoDB listens on 127.0.0.1 (the VM itself), port 27017, which is MongoDB's own default
  • Host firewall (ufw) that blocks inbound traffic except SSH and port 27017
  • Single server: no replica set (multi-server redundancy) is configured

After you deploy

  • Sign in over SSH. The generated admin password is in a root-only file; the login message (MOTD) shows how to read it and the mongosh command to connect.
  • Create your application users and databases, then change the admin password (db.changeUserPassword) and delete the file.
  • To connect from another host, the MOTD lists three deliberate steps: set bindIp in /etc/mongod.conf and restart mongod; allow port 27017 in your Azure network security group (NSG) only from your client addresses; and enable TLS (encrypted connections), because connections are unencrypted until you do.

Why this image

  • Saves MongoDB's manual "enable access control" procedure; first boot does it for you
  • Unique admin password on every VM, tested against the running server before it is recorded
  • No credential or key from the build machine: the image build fails if one is found at capture
  • A weekly verification job boots the newest image version and repeats the sign-in and access-control checks
  • Ubuntu updates applied when each image version is built

How it runs on Azure

A virtual machine in your own subscription and virtual network (VNet), so your data stays on disks you control. The software charge is pay-as-you-go on your Azure invoice, alongside compute and storage. Recommended size: Standard_D2as_v5 or larger.
