Codex Time Breakdown
Segmented bar chart — break total time or any additive measure into 3 named stages per row.
A stage-breakdown bar chart for Power BI — split a total duration into up to three named stages per row, so you can see not just how long something took but where the time actually went.
Codex Time Breakdown answers the question a stacked bar leaves open. A stacked bar gives you the total; this gives you the mix — every stage named, its value on the bar, and the total called out at the end of the row, with rows ordered by a measure you control.
New in v2: a categorical segment ramp with LED-style gaps, an optional Dead Time Segment that greys out non-productive stages, background transparency, and title and value text that adapts to dark report canvases.
Conditional formatting (fx) is available on the three segment colours, the total colour, and the category label colour — drive them from a measure or a rule.
IDEAL FOR
- Field service and dispatch — dispatch, travel, and on-site time per scenario
- Process cycle time where queueing, transit, and handling need separating
- SLA and response breakdowns where the stage mix matters more than the total
- Before-and-after process improvement comparisons
- Any additive measure that decomposes into named stages
KEY FEATURES
- Up to three named stage segments per row, each with its own colour and label
- Total measure rendered as an end-of-row label
- Dead Time Segment — render one chosen stage muted grey to mark idle or waiting time
- Optional delta chip comparing each row's total against the first row — lime when time was saved, magenta when it grew
- Configurable bar height, corner radius, and row spacing
- Optional legend with alignment control
- Segment labels and segment values toggled independently
- Configurable value unit and segment opacity
- Custom row ordering driven by a numeric Sort Order measure
- Full font controls on category, value, and total text
- Optional axis titles on both axes
- Optional internal title with full font and alignment controls
- Corner Accents — Corner Brackets, Accent Bar, or Glass Tube, auto or custom tint
- Background colour with 0-100% transparency — sits cleanly on any report canvas
- Configurable visual border — colour, transparency, width, and corner radius
- Click any segment or bar to cross-filter other visuals on the page
- High contrast mode support
PRO TIP
Point Dead Time Segment at whichever stage is waiting rather than working — usually queue or travel. The chart then reads immediately as value-adding versus not, which is the conversation most operations teams actually want to have.
