What This Image Gives You

OpenVSCode Server is Gitpod's open source build of Visual Studio Code that runs the complete editor as a service you reach from any browser. You get the familiar editor with syntax highlighting and IntelliSense, the integrated terminal, the extension marketplace, source control, search and workspace state - all hosted on your own cloud VM. Develop from a Chromebook, a tablet or a locked-down workstation while the code, tools and compute stay on the server.

Why This Image Instead of Manual Installation

Standing this up by hand means downloading and unpacking the server, creating a service account, writing a systemd unit, generating a secure token, putting a TLS reverse proxy in front of the loopback port and hardening every default. This image completes all of that before first boot:

• OpenVSCode Server 1.109.5 from the official upstream release, verified during the build
• nginx terminating TLS on port 443 and proxying the editor WebSocket, with port 80 redirecting to HTTPS, all from Ubuntu 24.04
• The editor bound to loopback 127.0.0.1:3000 and run by a dedicated unprivileged openvscode account, never root
• A systemd service with sane memory and task limits, enabled and active
• An unauthenticated health endpoint for Azure Load Balancer probes

Secure By Default: A Browser IDE Is Remote Code Execution

A browser IDE with an integrated terminal is effectively remote code execution on the VM, so the whole posture is the authentication. Most application images ship a default login and ask you to change it. This image ships no usable credential at all. At first boot your instance generates a unique high-entropy connection token, regenerates a per-VM TLS certificate, writes the access URL and token to a root-only file, and only then starts the editor. The build-time placeholder can never serve traffic because the editor service is gated on a first-boot marker, so no known credential is ever live and no two deployments can share one. The token gates every request: without it the editor returns HTTP 403, and the token round-trip is proven at build time.

Getting Started

Launch the image, read the connection token and access URL from /root/openvscode-credentials.txt, browse to the URL over HTTPS, and you are in a full Visual Studio Code editor. Open a folder, edit files, open the integrated terminal and install extensions from the marketplace. Replace the self-signed certificate with your own before opening the editor to the public.

Licensing and Pricing

OpenVSCode Server is licensed under the MIT License and is free. There is no per-seat fee. The cloudimg charge of 0.04 US dollars per vCPU hour covers packaging, security patching, image maintenance and 24/7 expert support.
