Oracle Linux Gen2

durch Derek Coleman & Associates Corporation

Oracle Linux 8.10, 9.8 and 10.2 for Azure Gen2 VMs, updated at build and tested on Trusted Launch.

You get Oracle Linux 8.10, 9.8 or 10.2, fully updated when the image was built and ready for SSH sign-in on an Azure Generation 2 (UEFI-based) VM. Each plan is one release, built from Oracle's own Oracle Linux image for Azure and booting the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK, Oracle's own build of the Linux kernel).

Who it's for

  • Teams that already run Oracle Linux and want the same releases on Azure
  • Platform teams that need Oracle Linux 8, 9 and 10 side by side, one plan per major release
  • Administrators who want a clean base OS for their own configuration tools

What's included

  • Oracle Linux 8.10 with UEK 5.15, Oracle Linux 9.8 with UEK 6.12, and Oracle Linux 10.2 with UEK 6.12. The Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK) is installed as well.
  • dnf (the package manager for RPM software packages) for updates
  • Azure Linux Agent (the service Azure uses to set up and manage the VM) and cloud-init (the tool that applies your first-boot settings), configured for Azure
  • rpcbind turned off at boot: this helper for NFSv3 network file shares no longer listens on port 111 and starts only when an NFSv3 mount needs it

After deployment

  • Deploy it from the Azure portal, then sign in over SSH (port 22) as the admin user with the key you set there. When you deploy with an SSH key, password sign-in over SSH is refused.
  • Nothing shared ships in the image: root has no usable password, the build account is removed, and the SSH host keys and machine ID are created fresh on your VM.
  • SSH is the only port listening publicly.
  • Open any other port yourself with a network security group (NSG, the firewall rules Azure applies to the VM).
  • Run sudo dnf upgrade to apply updates published since the build date.

Why this image

  • Pinned releases: the current image in each plan is one stated minor release, rebuilt from Oracle's source image
  • Patched at build: a full dnf upgrade, a reboot, and a check that the newest kernel is the one running before the image is captured
  • Tested on a real VM: a weekly test deploys each release as a Trusted Launch VM (Secure Boot plus a virtual TPM, Azure's boot-integrity protections) and checks SSH, provisioning, first-boot cleanup and open ports. On 7 October 2026 each release finished booting in under 70 seconds on a 2-vCPU Standard_D2s_v3.
  • Support: support@dcassociatesgroup.com and quick-start pages at www.dcassociatesgroup.com/support/

How it runs on Azure

The VM runs in your own Azure subscription and virtual network. Billing is pay-as-you-go on your Azure invoice: an hourly software charge per vCPU plus standard Azure compute and storage. An Oracle Linux Support subscription from Oracle, and licences for software you add, are not included. Requirement: a VM size that supports Generation 2.
