The formulas

=ROUTE.DISTANCE(origin, destination, [mode], [unit]) — real road distance between two locations, in miles or kilometers. Not as-the-crow-flies — the actual route.

=ROUTE.TIME(origin, destination, [mode], [departure_time]) — trip duration in minutes. Pass a future departure time to get traffic-aware drive times or transit schedules.

=ROUTE.DIRECTIONS(origin, destination, [unit], [mode], [departure_time]) — turn-by-turn directions as a spilled column, with the distance of each step. One formula, a full route plan.

=ROUTE.URL(origin, destination, [mode]) — a clickable, sharable Google Maps link for the trip. Never consumes a search.

For trucking and IFTA (requires the Trucking plan; free-trial accounts can try them within their trial allowance):

=ROUTE.STATEMILES(origin, destination, state, [mode]) — truck miles a trip drives in one state or province. Returns a single number, so you can put a column per state and fill it down your whole trip list.

=ROUTE.IFTA(origins, destinations, [mode]) — point it at your From and To columns and it returns every jurisdiction your trips crossed with the total miles in each. A quarter's mileage in one formula.

Travel modes: driving (default), walking, bicycling, transit, and truck — truck routing follows truck-legal roads, accounting for restrictions like low bridges and weight limits.

Flexible inputs. Full addresses, city + state, coordinates, airport codes, or place names — if HERE can find it, RouteMetrics can route it.

Built by a spreadsheet educator. RouteMetrics is made by Adam Steinfurth, CPA, the creator behind the Prolific Oaktree YouTube channel and SheetsHelp, and instructor of DataCamp's "Conditional Formatting in Google Sheets" course — the same practical, formula-first approach applied to routing. The templates that touch money are built to the source documents: mileage worksheets follow the IRS business rate including split-rate years, and the IFTA quarterly worksheet mirrors the IFTA-101 fuel tax schedule item for item.

Per-state mileage is an estimate produced by truck routing, provided for planning and record-keeping. It is not a certified mileage source and may differ from mileage standards required by a jurisdiction, broker, or auditor.
