Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is Microsoft's cloud-based desktop and application virtualization service, enabling organizations to deliver secure, scalable Windows desktops and apps to any device, anywhere. The AVD service, including connection brokering, identity, management, monitoring, and diagnostics, is fully hosted and managed in Azure, eliminating the need to operate gateway infrastructure or manage session broker services yourself.
Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid extends this model to non-Azure session hosts. With AVD Hybrid, organizations can leverage their existing on-premises infrastructure as AVD session hosts while retaining the full Azure management experience through the Azure portal.
The Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid Arc extension registers an Arc-enabled machine as an AVD session host and installs the AVD host agent and supporting components. Once deployed, the machine appears as a session host in your host pool and is available to service user connections via the same AVD connection flow used by Azure-native session hosts.

Prerequisites
Machine Identity The target machine may be joined to Microsoft Entra ID (cloud-only), Active Directory Domain Services, or Microsoft Entra hybrid joined (Active Directory domain-joined and registered with Entra ID). User identities that exist only in Active Directory Domain Services are not supported.

Host pool An AVD host pool must be pre-created in the Azure portal. Create a host pool for AVD Hybrid
Licensing Users accessing AVD Hybrid session hosts must be licensed for Azure Virtual Desktop. Eligible licenses include Microsoft 365 E3/E5, Windows 11/10 Enterprise E3/E5, RDS CALs, and others. While AVD Hybrid is in public preview, no additional user license is required. Additional licensing will be required once the feature is Generally Available. Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid Licensing
Network connectivity The Arc-enabled machine requires outbound network access to the required AVD service endpoints. Ensure firewall and proxy rules permit connections to the AVD control plane URLs. Required network endpoints for AVD Hybrid
