Apache Tomcat 10 Java app server on hardened Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Apache Tomcat 10 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
A production-ready Apache Tomcat 10.1 Java application server on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, built and hardened for the Azure Marketplace. Tomcat runs on OpenJDK 17 LTS under a dedicated service account, fronted by Apache HTTP Server, and is enabled to start on boot.
Who this is for: Java developers and platform teams who need a ready-to-deploy Jakarta EE / Servlet container on Azure for hosting WAR-packaged web applications.
Target industries: Enterprise Java shops, ISVs shipping Java web apps, and teams modernizing legacy Tomcat workloads onto Azure.
Value proposition: Standing up a secure Tomcat server on Azure means installing a JDK, deploying Tomcat, wiring a front-end web server, and hardening it. This image does that for you:
- Tomcat 10.1 on Java 17 LTS — the Jakarta EE 10 servlet container, installed under a dedicated
tomcatservice account and managed by systemd - Apache HTTP front end — Apache 2.4 pre-installed to sit in front of Tomcat for TLS termination and static content
- Monthly patched & hardened — rebuilt each month from the upstream base with the latest OS security updates; hardened to Microsoft's Azure Marketplace certification standards before any version is published
- Ready to run — the service is installed, enabled, and configured to start on boot, so the VM is productive minutes after deployment instead of after a manual install
- Audit trail per release — build and certification evidence retained for every published image version, available for compliance audits and change-management documentation
Plans available:
- Apache Tomcat 10 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS — Gen2 — Trusted Launch-capable Gen2 VM image; free image (standard Azure compute and storage rates apply). Apache Tomcat is open-source under the Apache License 2.0.
Supported software and integrations: Apache HTTP Server, Azure Application Gateway, Azure Monitor, Azure Virtual Network, and any WAR-packaged Jakarta EE / Servlet application.
Recommended deployment: Standard_D2ads_v6 or larger. Terminate TLS at Apache or Azure Application Gateway; deploy your WAR to the Tomcat webapps directory and scale out behind a load balancer.
