Production ready AWX on hardened base OS: the open source upstream of Ansible Automation Platform.

Deploy a Production-Ready AWX Automation Platform on Microsoft Azure

Deploy a production-ready AWX instance on Microsoft Azure in minutes and provide your Ansible automation with a powerful web interface, REST API, role-based access control, scheduling and centralised logging. Built for platform teams, managed service providers and administrators who currently run Ansible from laptops, scripts or cron jobs and need shared visibility, secure credential management and complete job history.

What You Get Out of the Box

  • Current stable AWX deployed using the official AWX Operator.
  • HTTPS enabled by default with a simple Let's Encrypt certificate workflow.
  • Secure administrator credential generation per deployment, with the initial password retrievable once and automatically removed afterwards.
  • Execution environment ready for running Ansible automation jobs.

Common Use Cases

  • From Laptops to a Shared Automation Platform – Move existing Ansible playbooks into a centralised platform with shared job templates, credential management, RBAC and audit history.
  • Scheduled Automation – Automate patching windows, compliance checks and configuration drift detection with scheduled jobs and centralised logging.
  • MSP Operations – Deploy identical AWX environments for customers or operate a shared instance with role-based separation between clients.
  • CI/CD Integration – Trigger automation workflows from GitLab CI pipelines, webhooks or custom applications through the REST API.
  • Path to Ansible Automation Platform – AWX is the upstream community project. Organisations requiring Red Hat support, enterprise lifecycle management and commercial features can transition while retaining their automation workflows.

Sizing Guidance

AWX requires more resources than a simple Ansible control node because it includes web services, databases, job execution components and background services.

  • Minimum viable deployment: Standard_D2s_v5 (2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM)
  • Recommended production deployment: Standard_D4s_v5 (4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM) with Premium SSD managed disks
  • Concurrent job-heavy environments: Standard_D8s_v5 (8 vCPU, 32 GB RAM), scaling further based on execution workload requirements.
