Reference OGC SensorThings API server storing IoT observations in PostgreSQL with PostGIS
FROST-Server is the Fraunhofer IOSB reference implementation of the OGC SensorThings API, the open standard for managing and sharing Internet of Things sensor data. It models the world as Things that carry Sensors, each feeding a Datastream of Observations of an ObservedProperty at a Location, and exposes that model over a clean REST interface that clients query, filter, page and expand with ordinary HTTP requests. Because it implements a published OGC standard rather than a proprietary API, the data you record is portable across the growing ecosystem of SensorThings clients and tools.
This cloudimg appliance runs the FROST-Server 2.8 HTTP service in Apache Tomcat 10 on OpenJDK 21, backed by PostgreSQL 16 with the PostGIS spatial extension, fronted by an allowlisting nginx reverse proxy, and tuned to run comfortably on a 2 vCPU / 4 GiB virtual machine with no swap. A small sample dataset of a weather station, a datastream and several temperature observations is ready to query the moment first boot completes.
Security is built in. FROST-Server's upstream default is an open, unauthenticated read and write API; this image ships with the authentication plugin enabled so that reads stay public while every write requires an administrator credential, and the three default accounts FROST would otherwise create are removed. The database password and the administrator credential are generated uniquely on each virtual machine at first boot and written to a root-only file, so the captured image contains no database password, no service credential and no TLS private key. PostgreSQL listens only on the loopback interface with scram-sha-256 and no trust rule, the servlet container listens only on loopback, and the base is fully patched with unattended security upgrades enabled. Every deployment is paired with a step-by-step deployment guide and backed by 24/7 cloudimg support.
