CryptPad on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

CryptPad is a fully open source, end-to-end-encrypted collaboration suite that you host yourself - a privacy-first alternative to the mainstream online office suites. Because every document is encrypted and decrypted in the browser, the server stores only ciphertext and never sees your content or your password: privacy is enforced by cryptography, not policy. This image delivers CryptPad fully installed and configured as a system service, so your private, self-hosted collaboration platform is running within minutes of launch. The current release available is CryptPad 2026.5.1.

CryptPad gives your team real-time collaborative rich-text Pads, Code and Markdown editors, full OnlyOffice-backed Documents, Spreadsheets and Presentations, Kanban boards, a Whiteboard, Forms and Polls, a Calendar, and an encrypted Drive to organise it all - shared over encrypted links, with several people editing the same document at once.

CryptPad runs on Node.js 22 LTS with its own built-in file datastore (no external database required), operated by an unprivileged service account under systemd and reached only through an nginx reverse proxy. To keep its security sandbox effective, CryptPad serves its interface from a dedicated sandbox origin that is isolated from the origin holding your account keys; this image configures both origins automatically for your VM on first boot.

CryptPad is end-to-end encrypted, so there is no server-side admin password to leak. The administration panel is disabled until you promote yourself by adding your own account's public signing key - no shared or default administrator ships in the image, and every instance generates its own unique secrets and an empty datastore on first boot.

Browse to the instance, register an account, and start collaborating. Create additional users, close open registration, or connect to a custom domain with HTTPS through the included documentation.
