Advanced pie & donut chart with rich formatting, and interactive drill-downs

Canvas Pie is a Power BI custom visual for presenting part-to-whole relationships with clarity and visual impact. It supports three chart styles — Pie, Donut, and Infographic Arc — and exposes an extensive set of formatting options through the Power BI format pane: chart shape, slice presentation, color palette, label placement, hover animations, legend, center label, and visual background.

If you have ever found the native Power BI pie or donut chart limited in styling, animation, or label control, DataFactZ's Canvas Pie is the upgrade your reports need.

Three Chart Types

  • Pie. A solid circular chart for straightforward part-to-whole comparison. Best for simple compositions of three to six categories.
  • Donut. A hollow-center variant with a configurable inner radius. Pair it with the Center Label to display a headline KPI — total revenue, total units, or any custom text — directly inside the chart.
  • Infographic Arc. A stylized arc presentation designed for executive summaries and presentation-focused report pages where visual impact matters as much as the data.

Three Slice Styles

  • Classic. Slices sit flush against each other in an unbroken circle — the clean, familiar default.
  • Exploded. All slices are offset outward from the center by a configurable amount, creating visual separation across every category.
  • Segmented. Slices are separated by a configurable gap for a modern, structured appearance without moving slices away from the center.

Key Features

  • 10 Color Palettes. Warm, Cool, Pastel, Earth, Jewel, Noir, Sunset, Ocean, Classic, and Theme — plus single-color mode for tonal sequences and gradient mode with configurable strength. Per-slice color overrides via the Data Point section let you highlight exactly the category that tells the story.
  • Rich Data Labels. Value, Percent, Category, or combinations; Inside, Outside, or Callout placement with leader lines; automatic overlap avoidance; pill backgrounds; configurable font, size, and color; and a trend indicator (arrow or triangle with separate increase and decrease colors) for benchmark comparisons.
  • Center Label. For Donut charts, display the sum of the bound measure or a fixed custom text. Font family, size, weight, color, display units, and decimals are all configurable.
  • Hover Animations. Glow (subtle, dashboard-friendly), Pulse (draws attention, suits demos), and Scale (enlarges the hovered slice for confirmation) — or disable animation entirely for kiosk or PDF-export views.
  • Load Animation. Smooth entry animation with configurable duration and stagger for a polished first render.
  • Drop Shadow. Configurable blur and opacity for presentation-quality depth, especially effective on Infographic Arc charts.
  • Flexible Legend. Nine anchor positions, horizontal and vertical orientation, optional title, value and percent display, configurable display units, decimals, and pill styling.
  • Visual Background. Solid fill or linear gradient with six direction presets and adjustable transparency.
  • Slice Borders. Configurable border color and width to sharpen boundaries between slices, particularly useful for reports with many small categories.
  • Drilldown. Enabled on both the Category and Legend data roles, using the standard Power BI drill controls to navigate from a high-level breakdown to finer-grained slices.
  • Accessibility. Keyboard focus (Tab/Shift+Tab, Enter/Space), a built-in landing page for first-use guidance, high-contrast theme support, and tooltips that surface category, value, and percentage details for screen-reader users.
  • Privacy and Security. The visual declares no privileges and makes no external HTTP or WebSocket calls. All data binding, rendering, animation, and tooltip operations run entirely client-side within the Power BI sandbox. No user data or telemetry is transmitted to any third party. Row-level security is fully honored.

Interactions with Other Visuals

Cross-filtering, cross-highlighting, multi-select (Ctrl/Cmd+click), drill-down, bookmark capture, report-page tooltip support, and focus mode are all supported natively.

Performance

Canvas Pie is optimized for summarized datasets. For best results, keep the Category (and optional Legend) at 30 or fewer distinct values. Beyond that, aggregate rare categories into an "Other" bucket at the model layer. Zero or null values are suppressed automatically and do not consume rendering budget.
